Role Summary

As a Backend Engineer, you'll work alongside a close-knit, fully remote team of engineers to evolve and improve our flagship customer-facing product. You’ll bring strong software engineering fundamentals and hands-on experience building backend systems using Python.

We're looking for someone who enjoys solving real-world problems and shipping high-quality software. You should have working knowledge of web development practices, RESTful API design, automated testing, version control, and CI/CD processes.

You’ll contribute to the design, implementation, and maintenance of reliable APIs and backend services that directly impact our customers. While mentorship will be available, you should be comfortable owning projects from idea to deployment in collaboration with peers and product teams.

You’ll Be Successful in This Role if You Have

  • A positive attitude. Egos are not part of our team culture!
  • Experience (3+ years) with Python-based web frameworks (we use Django).
  • Exceptional remote communication skills. Especially in writing.
  • The ability to work autonomously in a startup environment; you thrive under pressure and are comfortable adapting to rapidly evolving plans.
  • Proven production experience working with a relational database (we use MySQL).
  • A rigorous approach to software quality. You like to write tests.
  • A knack for learning new technologies, strong problem-solving skills, and an openness to creative solutions.
  • A genuine passion for crafting reliable web applications. You get it right the first time.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or equivalent on-the-job experience.

What You'll Do

  • Take ownership of new features from inception to production, contributing code continuously within a fast-paced, agile environment.
  • Collaborate closely with design, product, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver a user-friendly and engaging product for our customers.
  • Ship high-performing and resilient APIs that adhere to industry standards and are delightful to use.
  • Maintain a high standard of quality across our codebase by advocating for cleanliness, readability, speed, testability, and documentation.
  • Continuously improve the engineering process, helping us build a world-class team.

You May Also Have

  • Adtech Experience.
  • Specific Domain Experience in CTV.
  • Familiarity with AWS services, experience working in a microservice architecture or with containerization technologies.
  • Previous involvement in a production environment with a customer-facing reporting and analytics system.
  • Experience working with other types of datastores or backing services, like Redis.

  • Employee stock option program.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
