Why Standard Fleet?

Standard Fleet is building the next generation of Fleet Management software. With Standard Fleet, electric vehicles are first-class citizens and fleet operators no longer need to install cumbersome "dongles" in their vehicles to track or manage their vehicles. Our mission is to accelerate the commercial adoption of electric vehicles by setting a new standard in fleet management.

Every member of the Standard Fleet team is fueled by an unwavering passion for transportation and electrification and is deeply committed to making our products better. We come from companies like Apple, Uber, Tesla, Stripe, Robinhood, Yelp, and Embark. In 2024 our revenue grew by nearly 6X.

Standard Fleet is well-funded and backed by some of Silicon Valley’s top investors. Some of our founding team members, including our CEO David Hodge, founded Embark. At Embark, the team built a popular transportation app used by millions, which the team ultimately sold to Apple.

We’re seeking a backend engineer to help build the software solutions that fleets desperately need to unlock the power of connected and electric vehicles. You’ll be an early hire, helping to define the future of mobility and empowering thousands of businesses to switch to electric vehicles in the process. This is a rare opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the future of a rapidly evolving market with enormous growth potential.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain backend services and infrastructure that support our fleet management platform.

  • Collaborate with design, customer experience, and sales teams, as well as key customers, to define, design, and ship new backend features.

  • Work on core infrastructure, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance across our systems.

  • Own the deployment and monitoring of backend services, ensuring high availability and uptime.

  • Identify and address infrastructure bottlenecks, scaling issues, and operational challenges as fleets use our software in their day-to-day operations.

  • Help drive the technical direction of our backend architecture while balancing trade-offs between development speed and system maintainability.

  • Understand our customers' needs and the electric fleet market intimately to make informed product decisions.

Qualifications

We don’t believe in qualification checkboxes for candidates. These often cause great candidates to think they’re not qualified. If you think you can help us scale our business, let’s talk and see if we’re a fit.

You might be a good fit if…

  • You have a passion for the future of transportation.

  • You enjoy working on both backend features and infrastructure, and can confidently move between these areas.

  • You have strong problem-solving skills with an emphasis on scalability, reliability, and performance.

  • You have experience working with cloud infrastructure (e.g., GCP, AWS).

  • You have experience with Go and/or Python.

  • You have a customer-first mindset and are interested in building robust systems that help fleets operate efficiently.

  • You’re a self-starter who takes initiative and drives projects to completion.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
