Position Summary

Samsung TV Plus is an industry-leading FAST (free ad-supported TV) and VOD (video-on-demand) service reaching 30 countries and 500+ million devices globally across TV and mobile. One of the first FAST platforms, Samsung TV Plus now offers more than 400 channels in the U.S. and nearly 5,000 channels globally, along with thousands of shows and movies on-demand. FAST is the fastest-growing video segment among consumers and FAST ad spend is expected to surpass that of Broadcast/Cable (combined) and SVOD within the next three years. This role offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of the exploding and ever-evolving ad supported streaming space and play a key role in driving the growth of the TV Plus business.
The Senior Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, testing and automation of playout/rebroadcasting of FAST video content. This position will work on a small team as an individual contributor for coding, debugging, and deploying API-driven backend services

Role and Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct engineering activities, projects, research, and operational tests in conformance to functional specifications, design requirements, operational capacities, and customer performance expectations.
  • Debug production issues raised by customers and customer support teams, isolate the cause, and work towards a fix.
  • Participate in meetings with other staff members to evaluate, plan, and troubleshoot; and to ensure proper interface between software, systems, and operational performance.
  • Day to day interfacing with content ops debugging and developing solutions to on-board content partner’s media.
  • Exercise judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Designing and building scalable, production-ready, robust systems and services.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and teams across multiple time zones to deliver on exciting, globally viewed streaming content.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest trends in streaming technology.
  • Act as a technically proficient colleague to elevate the technical expertise of more junior team members through mentorship, thorough code reviews, design reviews, knowledge sharing, etc.

Skills and Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of software development experience in a large-scale production environment
  • Bachelors/Master’s Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related STEM field
  • Highly proficient with Python
  • Proficient with Golang
  • Knowledge of HLS and Dash streaming specs and Video streaming workflows
  • Knowledge of video and audio encoding profiles and technologies
  • Experience with deploying services in a Docker/Kubernetes environment, as well as using various AWS tools (Lambda, SQS, etc)
  • Experience with deploying services using various CDN technologies
  • Experience with AWS Elemental media services
  • Ability to solve problems in a fast paced and dynamic environment with focus on maintaining high quality and standards
  • Able to clearly communicate complex technical matters to an audience of varying technical competency orally and in writing (email, reports, etc)
  • Strong understanding of secure coding practices
  • Experience in writing unit, system and integration test cases and execution
  • Positive attitude, highly flexible, and self-motivated
  • Consumer of TV, gaming, and application content with a keen eye for what works in those spaces

Compensation for this role, for candidates based in Los Angeles, CA, is expected to be between $150,000 ~ $180,000.  Actual pay will be determined considering factors such as relevant skills and experience, and comparison to other employees in the role.
