Job Summary

Uphold is looking for a Backend Engineer (Digital Payments) to join our Engineering team. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to work in a very friendly environment and be part of a highly motivated, talented, and growing team.

In this role, you will help design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems that power Uphold’s digital payment infrastructure. Working with modern technologies and an agile mindset, you’ll play a key role in delivering secure, reliable, and high-performance payment solutions used by millions of customers worldwide.

You will be responsible for developing backend services and APIs that support payment flows, integrations, and transaction processing, ensuring high availability, correctness, and security across Uphold’s platform.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designing, developing, and maintaining backend services and APIs for digital payment systems.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams including Product, Frontend, QA, and Operations.
  • Working closely with Engineering teams in an agile development environment.
  • Participating in the review and creation of technical requirements, specifications, and system designs.
  • Building scalable, reliable, and secure payment-related services.
  • Integrating with internal systems and third-party payment providers.
  • Ensuring system performance, reliability, and fault tolerance.
  • Writing clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving production issues, including participating in on-call rotations when required.
  • Contributing to code reviews and promoting engineering best practices.
  • Continuously improving system architecture, performance, and developer experience.
  • Ensuring compliance with security, reliability, and quality standards.
  • Supporting deployments and monitoring of backend services in production environments.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2+ years of experience as a backend engineer (or equivalent).
  • Strong experience with backend development using one or more programming languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Python, Go, or similar).
  • Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Familiarity with databases (SQL and/or NoSQL) and data modeling.
  • Understanding of distributed systems and scalable architectures.
  • Experience working in an agile/lean development environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • High attention to detail and a strong sense of ownership.
  • Fluent written and oral English skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Passion for building reliable systems and improving financial products.

Bonus if you have:

  • Experience working with payment systems or digital wallets.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or similar).
  • Familiarity with microservices architectures.
  • Experience with message queues or event-driven systems.
  • Knowledge of security best practices in financial systems.
  • Experience working with blockchain or Web3-related technologies.
