Role Overview

We are seeking an Atmospheric Scientist to join our Model Development Group. The ideal candidate is someone with a quantitative background in atmospheric science, who thrives on solving complex problems, particularly in natural catastrophe and statistical modeling. Your expertise with large datasets and programming will be invaluable. As part of our team, you'll contribute to diverse projects, from crafting innovative solutions to resolving client queries. This will be a remote position.  

Responsibilities

  • Collect, analyze, and process large atmospheric data sets from national and international sources.
  • Develop and validate stochastic precipitation models for use in the assessment of catastrophe risk.
  • Collaborate with hydrologists and hydraulic engineers to ensure scientifically sound representations of flood events.
  • Assist in creating simulated and near-real-time high-resolution flood events.
  • Collaboratively write code to manipulate and analyze complex numeric or geographic data sets.
  • Write clear documentation of implemented methodologies, justifying critical steps and assumptions. 
  • Present model results and data analysis findings to team members and clients with diverse scientific and statistical backgrounds.
  • Utilize the KatRisk Software Suite and interpret results for client and internal studies.

Requirements

Required

  • M.S. or PhD degree in Atmospheric Science, Hydrometeorology, or Applied Statistics with experience in climate extremes.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as R, FORTRAN, BASH scripting, Python, and/or C++.
  • Thorough understanding of probability and statistics.
  • Experience in the modeling of atmospheric processes related to extreme precipitation.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred
  • Knowledge of LINUX user environment and command-line operation.
  • Experience in the analysis of climate change impacts on precipitation extremes.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), e.g., QGIS, GRASS, GDAL
  • Additional applicable work experience.
