About Clear Street:

Clear Street is modernizing the brokerage ecosystem. Founded in 2018, Clear Street is a diversified financial services firm replacing the legacy infrastructure used across capital markets.

We started from scratch by building a completely cloud-native clearing and custody system designed for today’s complex, global market. Clear Street’s proprietary prime brokerage platform adds significant efficiency to the market, while focusing on minimizing risk, redundancy, and cost for clients. Our goal is to create a single source-of-truth platform for every asset class, in every country, and in any currency.

By combining highly-skilled product and engineering talent with seasoned finance professionals, we’re building the essentials to compete in today’s fast-paced markets.

The Role

The Compliance Team seeks a detail-oriented and motivated Surveillance Associate to be responsible for conducting daily trade surveillance reviews for the Firm’s active trader client base.  This role focuses on detecting, reviewing and escalating potential market manipulation and abusive trading activity using Nasdaq Trade Surveillance (NTS) with primary coverage of equities and listed options.  The position requires strong analytical judgment and experience reviewing complex trading strategies and order placement patterns typical of active retail trading. This role offers exposure to complex trading behavior, evolving surveillance scenarios, and opportunities to expand responsibility over time.

Responsibilities

  • Review order lifecycle data (order entry, modification, cancellation and execution) to assess intent and impact
  • Analyze activity to identify potential manipulation and abusive practices such as spoofing, layering, momentum ignition, wash trading, marking the open/close and pre-arranged trades.
  • Perform cross-product surveillance across equities and listed options.
  • Independently review and disposition NTS alerts through trade reconstruction, order book analysis and market context review.
  • Document findings clearly and concisely in surveillance case management systems
  • Escalate potential to senior surveillance personnel with clear supporting analysis
  • Assist in preparing case summaries for month Trade Surveillance Committee meetings
  • Provide feedback to senior team members on alert performance, false positives and recurring patterns observed in NTS.
  • Identify surveillance caps or emerging risks associated with new products, order types or customer trading behavior

Experience and Skills:

  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience using NTS in a broker-dealer or exchange environment
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and investigating layering, spoofing, momentum ignition, coordinated trading, and other market manipulation alerts.
  • Strong understanding of equities and listed options markets, including order types, routing, execution mechanics and common trading strategies
  • Ability to assess trading intent and distinguish legitimate strategies from abusive conduct
  • Experience supporting active retail trading environments
  • Strong analytical, investigative and documentation skills

We Offer:

The Base Salary Range for this role is $95,000-$110,000. This range is representative of the starting base salaries for this role at Clear Street. Where a candidate falls in this range will be based on job related factors such as relevant experience, skills, and location. This range represents Base Salary only, which is just one element of Clear Street's total compensation. The range stated does not include other factors of total compensation such as bonuses or equity.

At Clear Street, we offer competitive compensation packages, company equity, 401k matching, gender neutral parental leave, and full medical, dental and vision insurance. Our belief has always been that we are better as a business when we are all together in person. As such, we are requiring employees to be in the office 4 days per week. In-office benefits include lunch stipends, fully stocked kitchens, happy hours, a great location, and amazing views.

Our top priority is our people. We’re continuously investing in a culture that promotes collaboration. We help each other through challenges and celebrate each other's successes. We believe that modern workplaces succeed by virtue of having high-performance workforces that are diverse — in ideas, in cultures, and in experiences. We put in the effort to make such a workplace a daily reality and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
