About this role

Team Overview

BlackRock SMA Solutions helps clients customize portfolios for unique tax, values-alignment, or investment exposures across direct indexing, fixed income, active equity, and multi-asset. We deliver world-class service to all of our clients, from wealth advisors to family offices to endowments and foundations.

About the Role

We are seeking a Product Manager to support the design and delivery of cross-functional product, platform, and operating-model initiatives critical to the continued growth and operational efficiency of BlackRock’s Separately Managed Accounts (SMA) business. The role partners with Portfolio Management, Trading, Operations, and Engineering to deliver scalable systems and workflows that improve efficiency, reduce operational risk, and support business growth.

This role is well suited to someone who combines technical fluency with strong business judgment, structured problem solving, and disciplined execution. The successful candidate will be intellectually curious, highly organized, comfortable working through ambiguity, and motivated to improve complex investment and operational workflows. They will partner closely with portfolio managers, traders, operations, engineers, and other product teams to understand business needs, translate them into actionable requirements, and move defined initiatives from discovery through implementation and post-launch stabilization. They will help teams maintain alignment, will surface risks and dependencies early, and ensure that designed solutions deliver real improvements to stakeholders while minimizing operational risk.

Key Responsibilities

Product Analysis and Delivery

  • Develop deep end-to-end expertise in portfolio management, trading, client onboarding, account servicing, and investment operations workflows across SMA Solutions.
  • Gather, analyze, and prioritize requirements, balancing business value, risk, resources, and delivery constraints.
  • Use data and business context to recommend practical, scalable solutions.
  • Partner with engineers, testers, users, and third-party providers throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Support testing, release readiness, user adoption, and continuous product improvement.
  • Own defined product and technical workstreams from discovery through design, development, testing, launch, and post-launch stabilization.

Stakeholder and Execution Management

  • Manage and coordinate interactions between business users, Product Management, Engineering, and external providers.
  • Track deliverables, dependencies, and project risks, escalating issues promptly and transparently.
  • Prepare clear recommendations and decision materials that enable senior product and business leaders to resolve complex design or prioritization questions.
  • Manage workstream plans, dependencies, risks, assumptions, decisions, constraints, and open questions across multiple stakeholder teams.
  • Use automation and AI-assisted tools appropriately to improve analysis, requirements development, documentation, reporting, and knowledge management.
  • Build trusted working relationships across teams and promote a collaborative, accountable, and solutions-oriented culture.

Production and Process Improvement

  • Investigate and triage time-sensitive issues in a live trading environment.
  • Identify root causes and opportunities to improve system reliability and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate, organized product and process documentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Typically 5 years of relevant experience in product management, business analysis, financial technology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience translating complex business or operational needs into structured requirements and executable technology deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze end-to-end workflows, identify gaps and dependencies, and contribute to practical future-state solutions.
  • Working knowledge of the software development lifecycle, agile delivery practices, testing, release readiness, and post-launch support.
  • Experience coordinating cross-functional initiatives involving multiple stakeholders, systems, dependencies, or workstreams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to organize ambiguous information, evaluate trade-offs, and formulate clear recommendations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining follow-through.
  • Proficiency with product-management and delivery tools such as Azure DevOps, Jira, Confluence, Airtable, or comparable platforms.
  • Interest in using automation and AI-enabled tools to improve product-management and delivery processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with order-management, trading, portfolio-management, or investment-operations systems.
  • Familiarity with separately managed accounts, portfolio management, trading, direct indexing, or tax-aware investing.
  • Experience supporting geographically distributed teams or initiatives spanning multiple asset classes and business functions.
  • Experience working with databases and writing SQL queries.
  • Experience supporting production systems in a time-sensitive environment.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
