What are we looking for?

As an Associate Product Designer at BetterHelp, you will support the creation of intuitive, thoughtful experiences that help millions of people access mental health care. You will work closely with senior designers and cross-functional partners to design user flows, interfaces, and prototypes that address user needs and drive measurable product impact.

This role is ideal for someone early in their career who is eager to grow, learn, and contribute to end-to-end product development from discovery to launch and iteration.

What will you do?
  • Create user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes that address clear user and business needs.
  • Conduct lightweight user research and usability testing to explore pain points and validate concepts.
  • Identify UI/UX issues across product surfaces and propose pragmatic improvements.
  • Write clear design specs and collaborate with engineers to support smooth handoff and implementation.
  • Work cross-functionally with Product, Data, and Engineering to define problems and contribute to new feature delivery.
  • Leverage qualitative and quantitative data to iterate on shipped experiences and improve performance.
  • Participate in design critiques and team rituals, contributing to shared standards and best practices.
  • Support documentation and maintenance of design patterns, in partnership with senior designers and design system contributors.
What will you NOT do?
  • You will NOT worry about "runway", "cash left", or "how much time we have until the next round". We have the startup DNA but we're fully backed and funded, all the way to success.
  • You will NOT be confined to your "job". You will get involved in product, marketing, business strategy, and almost everything we do.
  • You will NOT be bogged down by office politics, ego, or bad attitude. Only positive, pleasure-to-work-with people are allowed here!
  • You will NOT get yourself burned out. We work hard but we believe in maintaining a sustainable work/life balance. Really.
Can I work remotely?

Yes. We operate on PST and candidates in any time zone are welcome to apply. We ask employees to travel to our San Jose, CA office up to three times per year plus one company-wide offsite to collaborate in person and strengthen working relationships. Travel expenses are covered and reasonable accommodations are made for those under unique circumstances who cannot travel.

Requirements
  • 1–2+ years of experience in product design or related roles.
  • Portfolio showcasing user flows, interface design, prototypes, and shipped work.
  • Familiarity with Figma and modern design tools.
  • Curiosity and eagerness to understand user behavior, mental models, and product constraints.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to balance user needs, business goals, and technical constraints.
  • Comfort iterating quickly with feedback from users, PMs, engineers, and data partners.

Bonus

  • Experience working on consumer-facing products, growth surfaces, or experimentation flows.
  • Exposure to or interest in mental health or healthcare products.
  • Basic experience with usability testing tools, user interviews, or data analysis.
  • Familiarity with design systems or component libraries.
Benefits
  • Remote work with regular in-person bonding experiences sponsored by the company
  • Competitive compensation
  • Holistic perks program (including free therapy, employee wellness, and more)
  • Excellent health, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401k benefits with employer matching contribution

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
