Associate General Counsel – Employment 

Position Type: Full-time, salaried, exempt

Compensation: DOE ($175,000 to $250,000)

Job Summary

Theoria Medical is seeking an experienced Employment Attorney to oversee employment-related litigation and manage insurance coverage matters impacting labor and employment risks. This role is critical to protecting Theoria’s legal and financial interests across a complex regulatory landscape. The attorney will collaborate with internal stakeholders and external counsel to mitigate legal risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and support a healthy workplace culture across our business operations.

Shift Structure 

  • Remote position, Full Time, M-F, 40-50 hours/week
  • Preferred hours: 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. ET 

Key Responsibilities

  • Legal Counsel & Compliance
    • Provide strategic advice on employment law issues, including performance management, terminations, accommodations, leaves of absence, and workplace policies.
    • Lead or oversee internal investigations involving employee complaints or potential legal exposure.
    • Recommend corrective actions or legal strategies to mitigate risk and ensure compliance with applicable laws and company policies.
    • Stay current on federal, state, and local employment laws and advise HR and management on compliance.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of company policies and training programs related to employment practices. 
  • Litigation Oversight
    • Manage and oversee employment litigation, including claims involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wage and hour disputes, wrongful termination, and other employment-related matters.
    • Develop and execute litigation strategy in coordination with outside counsel and internal stakeholders.
    • Supervise and monitor case progress, including reviewing pleadings, discovery, motions, and trial preparation.
    • Manage budgets and billing related to litigation matters.

Insurance and Risk Management

  • Manage and coordinate employment practices liability insurance (EPLI) and other relevant coverages in collaboration with Risk Management.
  • Provide input on policy renewals, claims handling, and coverage analysis related to employment disputes.
  • Ensure timely and appropriate notification and coordination with insurers on covered claims.
  • Assist in managing insurer relationships and optimizing insurance recoveries related to litigation.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Serve as a trusted advisor to HR, management, and executive leadership.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including HR, Compliance, and Risk Management.

Other Tasks as Assigned 

Qualifications 

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar (preferably [state relevant to company operations]).
  • 7+ years of legal experience, with at least 3 years focused on employment litigation (preferrably in the healthcare industry).
  • Demonstrated experience managing outside counsel and handling complex litigation matters.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state employment laws, regulations, and litigation procedures.
  • Strong understanding of employment-related insurance coverage, including EPLI.
  • Exceptional judgment, communication (written and oral), and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google product suites. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior in-house legal experience in a healthcare system, group practice, or health services organization.
  • Experience in managing complex litigation and insurance policies for corporate Risk Management.
  • Working knowledge of healthcare-specific legal frameworks (e.g., CMS, HIPAA, and payer credentialing).

  • Reliable transportation for external filings or mailings
