We empower our team members to drive innovation, create value, and continue to spearhead the creation of this industry — a game changer when it comes to career growth.

Position Title: Associate Counsel

Location: U.S. Remote

Employment Type: Full-time

About the role

This role supports intellectual property, advertising law, copyright, and marketing legal review for LTK's global footprint. You'll manage LTK's trademark and copyright portfolio, own the DMCA safe harbor program, advise on advertising and endorsement compliance across multiple jurisdictions, and manage litigation within your subject areas, handling both offensive and defensive legal work.

You'll also build and manage the infrastructure that makes these functions scalable: intake processes, decision frameworks, playbooks, business team training, AI-assisted workflows. The right candidate is resourceful and self-directed: sees a gap in how something operates, figures it out, and builds the solution.

You'll work as part of a small, collaborative team that includes the Deputy General Counsel, an Associate Counsel (Product & Regulatory), and a Privacy Program Manager. The broader Legal Team includes a separate Commercial function that handles contracts. You'll report to the Deputy General Counsel, Product, IP, Privacy & Regulatory, who sets portfolio strategy and maintains oversight on high-exposure matters. You're the primary day-to-day contact for outside trademark counsel and the direct legal contact for LTK teams within your remit.

This role is designed for professional growth. You'll receive mentorship and support as you onboard, with rapid progression toward full portfolio ownership. From day one, you'll manage enforcement actions, direct outside counsel, and handle litigation, with increasing depth and autonomy as you build context in LTK's business. As business priorities shift, counsel will be expected to flex across IP, advertising, and other areas of legal risk management, maintaining breadth, value-add judgment, and tight execution, across the portfolio.

How you will make an impact

Trademark Portfolio & Enforcement

  • Own prosecution, maintenance, and renewal across a global trademark portfolio
  • Direct outside counsel day-to-day: evaluate recommendations, review billing, and manage the relationship under DGC oversight on strategy and spend
  • Manage outside counsel budget, including invoice review, forecasting, and cost management
  • Execute portfolio rationalization: evaluate mark strength, geographic coverage, and business alignment to redirect spend toward business priorities
  • Manage watch services and enforcement matters; conduct likelihood of confusion analysis; evaluate oppositions; draft and manage C&Ds, takedowns, and enforcement actions
  • Manage domain monitoring, enforcement, and acquisition; handle squatter situations across jurisdictions; coordinate trademark use strategy across products, marketing, and business operations
  • Maintain organized matter files and outcome tracking across all enforcement and litigation matters

 DMCA & Copyright

  • Own the DMCA safe harbor program end-to-end: notice intake, evaluation, takedowns, counter-notice analysis
  • Build and maintain decision frameworks so the support team handles and tracks routine matters effectively; train the support team on application
  • Handle inbound and outbound copyright infringement matters
  • Assess and manage music copyright exposure
  • Support content clearance (photography, film, music licenses) as copyright questions arise
  • Serve as the legal team's subject matter expert on copyright; coordinate with the product legal team on matters with platform design implications

 Advertising & Marketing Law

  • Advise on advertising compliance across US and international markets, including FTC substantiation requirements, TCPA, CAN-SPAM, UDAP, state consumer protection, ASA (UK), and EU unfair commercial practices
  • Own endorsement and disclosure compliance for influencer campaigns
  • Provide the TCPA/CAN-SPAM legal requirements that LTK's SMS compliance program must satisfy
  • Build and maintain a marketing review intake process and self-service playbooks so routine items are handled at scale
  • Handle government and regulatory inquiries within subject areas with outside counsel support
  • Track advertising and marketing law developments, assess LTK impact, and contribute sections to the team's regulatory report

 Enforcement & Litigation

  • Manage enforcement and pre-litigation matters across subject areas, including investigation, evidence gathering, matter file management, and outside counsel coordination
  • Manage litigation within subject areas with outside counsel
  • Trade secrets: maintain the framework (protectable asset definitions, agreement provisions, monitoring and response to potential misappropriation)

Process Development & Reporting

  • Build scalable playbooks, templates, and process documentation across all owned areas
  • Evaluate and implement AI-assisted workflows and agent-based triage for routine matters
  • Deliver training to business teams within owned areas
  • Produce quarterly portfolio health reporting for leadership
  • Contribute advertising, marketing, and IP sections to the team's regulatory and litigation reports and leadership-facing reports

What you will bring to LTK

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • 3-5 years of experience spanning IP and advertising law. The strongest candidates will have practiced in both areas, whether at a firm, in-house at a technology or platform company, or across multiple roles. We are looking for someone comfortable working across trademark, copyright, advertising compliance, and enforcement rather than deeply specialized in one.
  • Experience managing or directing outside counsel relationships
  • Familiarity with DMCA notice-and-takedown procedures and copyright enforcement
  • Experience with FTC advertising and endorsement compliance
  • Strong legal analysis, independent judgment, and the ability to know when to escalate
  • Ability to establish legal processes and work effectively with business teams across multiple departments and geographies
  • Demonstrated ability to build processes and create scalable frameworks
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience managing a multi-jurisdictional international trademark portfolio
  • Experience with TCPA and CAN-SPAM compliance
  • Experience at a technology, e-commerce, platform, or creator economy company
  • Experience with trademark management systems
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted legal tools and workflows
  • Experience with music licensing or content clearance
  • Exposure to international advertising law (UK ASA, EU unfair commercial practices)
  • A mindset focused on seizing opportunities and moving with urgency
  • Dedication to fierce prioritization and operational excellence
  • Adaptability to a dynamic, fast-moving environment
  • A growth mindset and openness to feedback #LI-TA2

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
