Job Summary:

The Assistant Controller will play a critical leadership role in driving the accuracy of financial reporting, as well as, efficiency and scalability of OpenGov’s accounting operations. Reporting to the Controller, this leader will oversee the Corporate Accounting and Payroll functions, ensuring timely, high-quality financial reporting and operational excellence across the business.

As a key partner to Finance and business leaders, the Assistant Controller will bring both technical accounting expertise and a process-optimization mindset to help OpenGov scale. The ideal candidate thrives in a dynamic, high-growth environment—someone who can roll up their sleeves to improve systems and controls while also stepping back to design for the next stage of growth.

This is a highly visible role with the opportunity to build, lead, and elevate the accounting function as OpenGov continues to expand its impact on the public sector.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and functions such as general ledger, consolidations, and payroll

  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting, including balance sheet reconciliations and income statement analysis

  • Manage the preparation and review of financial statements, including global consolidations and reporting to the parent company

  • Partner with auditors and ensure compliance with accounting standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements

  • Design and enhance scalable systems, internal controls, and accounting policies to support growth

  • Drive automation and efficiency in payroll and close processes

  • Collaborate closely with FP&A, business operations, and executive leadership to provide insights that drive decision-making

  • Oversee payroll for the global company

  • Lead financial due diligence and integration planning for acquisitions.

  • Partner cross-functionally to ensure seamless post-acquisition integration into financial systems and reporting

Requirements and Preferred Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required; CPA strongly preferred

  • 7-10 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance, including prior experience in public accounting (Big 4 accounting firm or equivalent)

  • Background in a SaaS or high-growth technology company strongly preferred

  • Proven experience managing a team

  • Experience overseeing payroll, equity accounting and/or administration, and other technical accounting areas specific to SaaS

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization

  • Strong command of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls, with a track record of driving accuracy and operational excellence

  • San Francisco Bay area or Chicagoland area preferred

Compensation:

San Francisco, CA: $225,000 - $245,000

On target ranges above include base plus a portion of variable compensation that is earned based on company and individual performance.

The final compensation will be determined by a number of factors such as qualifications, expertise, and the candidate’s geographical location.
