Truss is a software development consultancy that builds government technology people actually want to use. Our systems regularly show up in the New York Times, and when we ask our team what they love most about working here, the answer is consistently the same: the people. We’re collaborative, we hold ourselves to high standards, and we care deeply about the craft of making government services work better.
We have been a remote-first organization since our inception and are passionate about work-life balance, building impactful teams, and committed to creating environments that encourage collaboration, different points of view, and creative solutioning.

Truss is seeking a contract software engineer to support one of our federal government clients.

We're looking for a mid-level software engineer comfortable building application interfaces and the backend services that power them. The ideal candidate has worked within agile development teams, has supported federal government clients and/or worked as a consultant. They should bring an adaptive, empathetic, and collaborative mindset and strong communication skills.
As a fully remote team, applicants should be comfortable staying connected through tools like Slack, Jira, and Zoom, participating in regular meetings with the client team, and giving thoughtful, constructive feedback in code reviews. Experience with modern DevOps practices, frameworks like React, or technologies such as GraphQL, Postgres, and Node.js is a plus.

This engineer will join a committed team working within fast-paced environment on a high-profile project that demands continuous delivery. The work is meaningful, and the team is exceptional; however, it is also challenging, and dedication is expected from all members.

This role is expected to work 35 hours per week including the core hours of 10:00am - 4:00pm ET.
Candidates must be able to travel to Baltimore, MD twice per calendar year.

Hourly rate is $80 - $88 dependent on experience.
Contract lasts through April 2027 with potential extension.

Eligibility:
You must be eligible to work in the U.S. and may be required to pass a federal background check at the discretion of the client/project you are placed on. Truss employees must live and work within the contiguous U.S. Unfortunately, we are unable to sponsor work visas at this time.

Full-Time Employees enjoy full benefits, generous PTO, a co-working budget, an employee effectiveness budget, and company-wide transparency around salaries and career leveling (view the Truss Leveling Guide).

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
