With the most comprehensive collection of trails in the world, AllTrails supports inclusive access to nature for a global community of millions of trailgoers. Every day, we solve incredibly hard problems to get more people outside, for their wellbeing and the collective care of the natural world. Join us!

San Francisco employees are highly encouraged to come to the office one day per week.

About the Role

As an Android Engineer at AllTrails, you’ll be an architect of the bridge between the digital world and the great outdoors. You won’t just be writing code; you’ll be building the tools that help millions of people find their way back home after a day on the trail.

This is an early-career role designed for an iOS Engineer who has moved past the basics and is ready to sharpen their skills in a large-scale production environment. Whether you are a recent graduate or have a few years of professional experience under your belt, you’ll focus on mastering our native apps under the mentorship of senior staff. Your primary goals will be contributing clean, scalable code, adopting complex architectural patterns, and expanding your expertise within a modern mobile stack.

What You'll Be Doing:

    • Design and build features in the AllTrails Android app that power our on-trail navigation and discovery experiences

    • Collaborate with cross-functional partners across design, product, analytics, and QA.

    • Identify and fix bugs to keep the app stable and reliable, even in low-connectivity environments

    • Deliver performant, reliable, scalable, and secure code that our users can trust on every adventure

    • Monitor app performance and help address scaling issues in partnership with more senior engineers

Requirements:

    Experience

    • Demonstrable projects and results from 1-4 years of developing native Android applications (professional or substantial personal/academic work)

    • Technical Skills

      • Proficiency with Kotlin and familiarity with modern Android development patterns; experience with Coroutines and Flows for reactive state management is a plus.

      • Experience with Java and Android Studio

      • Familiarity with RESTful APIs and integrating backend services into mobile apps

      • Experience with Jetpack Compose or strong interest in learning and using Compose in production code

      • Exposure to local persistence technologies such as Room or SQLite and an interest in building offline-ready experiences

      • Proficiency with Git/GitHub or other distributed version control systems

      • Foundational Engineering & Collaboration

        • Self-motivation and a deep sense of pride in your work, with attention to writing clean, maintainable code

        • Curiosity, humility, and open-mindedness—you’re eager to learn from feedback and from more senior teammates

        • Passion for mobile technologies and AllTrails’ mission to connect people to the outdoors.

        • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams (product, analytics, design) or similar project-based collaboration in school or internships

        • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience

Bonus:

    • Mapping/GIS experience or a strong interest in geospatial products

    • Fluency with A/B testing or experimentation frameworks on mobile

    • A keen eye for interaction design and finishing touches in polished native Android experiences

    • Proven ability to quickly learn new technologies and processes in a fast-moving environment

    • AI Native: you naturally incorporate AI tools to enhance your work—writing prompts, evaluating outputs, and experimenting with new ways to boost creativity, productivity, and decision-making

    • Experience working with or contributing to mobile design systems

Nature celebrates you just the way you are and so do we! At AllTrails we’re passionate about nurturing an inclusive workplace that values diversity. It’s no secret that companies that are diverse in background, age, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, ethnicity, and perspective are proven to be more successful. We’re focused on creating an environment where everyone can do their best work and thrive.

Offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. AllTrails will consider all qualified applicants, including those with arrest and conviction records, in a manner consistent with all applicable laws, including the Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring Ordinance, the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, and the New York City Fair Chance Act.

AllTrails participates in the E-Verify program for all remote locations.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
