About Us

Modern Animal is reimagining veterinary care and is looking for an Analytics Engineer to shape and enhance our data ecosystem by developing scalable analytics solutions that deliver business value and improve the quality of care we provide.

The Role

We are looking for an Analytics Engineer to advance our data and analytics function, enabling greater data-driven decision-making across the organization. In this role you will be responsible for building and scaling data products (reporting, tools/services) and analytic frameworks (decision frameworks, metrics, analytical models). You will be a “force multiplier” who significantly improves and speeds up Modern Animal’s ability to drive the business.

This is a cross-functional, high-impact role which requires strong business acumen, excellent communication skills, and the ability to scope and execute projects with autonomy. You will work closely with stakeholders arounds the company, including members of the engineering, product, operations, marketing, and finance teams, to ensure our analytics are optimized for efficiency and insight generation.

What You’ll Do
  • Design and build our analytics foundation - Architect, model, and maintain clean, well-documented data sets and dbt models that power reporting, self-serve analysis, and experimentation across Modern Animal.
  • Ship and maintain high-impact data products - Develop and own dashboards, tools, and automated reports end-to-end — from ingestion and transformation to testing, documentation, and monitoring — so stakeholders can rely on accurate, timely insights.
  • Define and standardize metrics - Partner with business leaders to define source-of-truth metrics, build reusable analytical frameworks, and reduce ambiguity in how we measure the health of our business and the quality of care we provide.
  • Partner deeply with cross-functional teams - Collaborate with product, operations, marketing, finance, and clinical teams to understand their goals, translate questions into data problems, and turn complex analyses into clear narratives and visualizations that drive decisions and action.
Who You Are

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience in analytics engineering, data analytics, or data engineering.
  • Self-starter and natural finisher - you are someone who gets sh*t done.
  • Innate intellectual curiosity - you possess a desire to understand the complexities of our business, and seek to elevate the prowess of our data and analytics capabilities.
  • Strong business acumen - you have the ability to understand and anticipate the needs of the business and stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills - both written and verbal - including experience presenting insights and recommendations to leadership.
  • Character and integrity - you do the right thing, not the easy thing.
  • High proficiency with SQL.
  • Experience with one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, Javascript) and markup/configuration languages (e.g. YAML).
  • Experience building data models and pipelines using transformation and orchestration software (e.g. dbt, Airflow).
  • Experience building reports/dashboards with business intelligence (BI) tools, such as Tableau, Looker, Metabase, etc.).

Nice to have:

  • Experience working with cloud platforms, such as AWS or GCP.
  • Software development skills, including an understanding of CI/CD, dev ops, and Git.
  • Experience with product and analytics tools, such as Posthog, Heap, Amplitude, and/or Google Analytics.
Why Join Us?
  • Excellent medical, vision, & dental coverage with various options to choose from
  • 401k savings plan with a company match
  • Flexible time off & paid parental leave
  • Free membership to Modern Animal for your pets and discounts on extra services
  • Access to behavioral and mental health services through Spring Health
  • A collaborative team who has your back and will welcome you as part of our pack

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
