The opportunity - AI Systems Engineer - Remote (USA / Canada)

Wrapbook is seeking an AI Systems Engineer to build and deploy AI-driven internal tools and workflow automations that supercharge our operations. In this role, you will report to the Director of AI & Operational Transformation and collaborate across departments to streamline internal processes. You'll leverage a mix of no-code/low-code platforms (Zapier, etc.) and traditional programming (Python, JavaScript) to integrate systems like Salesforce, Slack, Notion, and Decagon. Our ideal candidate is passionate about using AI to drive efficiency, embraces rapid experimentation and continuous improvement and takes ownership of building internal solutions that give our teams unprecedented leverage in their day-to-day work.

If you thrive in a culture that values innovation, decentralization of ideas, and high-impact solutions, we'd love to hear from you.

What you'll do:

  • Develop AI-Driven Internal Tools: Design, build, and maintain internal applications and bots that automate workflows for our operations teams. Use AI services (e.g., NLP/LLM APIs) to create intelligent tools (such as Slack chatbots, smart data-entry forms, and automated report generators) that reduce manual work and provide real-time insights.

  • Workflow Automation: Identify repetitive or time-consuming operational processes and implement automation using no-code/low-code tools (Zapier, Make, etc.) and custom scripts.

  • Systems Integration: Connect and integrate various internal systems and APIs. Ensure data flows seamlessly between platforms like Salesforce (CRM), Slack (communications), Decagon (AI agent platform), and Airia (AI assistant). Build reliable connectors or utilize integration platforms to enable these systems to work in concert.

  • Testing & Deployment: Rigorously test automation workflows and AI tool implementations for accuracy, reliability, and security. Deploy solutions in a staged manner, gather user feedback, and iterate quickly. Embrace a rapid development cycle—prototype, test, learn, and scale successful solutions—aligning with Wrapbook's culture of experimentation and agility.

  • Documentation & Training: Document the internal tools and workflows you build, including architecture, use cases, and maintenance guides. Conduct demos or training sessions with end-users (e.g., operations associates, finance team members) to ensure adoption and gather input for improvements. Enable a self-service mindset by creating clear guides so that internal teams can leverage the tools effectively.

  • Operational Excellence: Monitor the performance and impact of deployed automations. Use metrics to identify bottlenecks or areas for further optimization. Work closely with the Director of AI & Operational Transformation to align projects with our broader AI strategy—focusing on high-leverage opportunities that significantly improve internal efficiency and throughput.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with stakeholders in Risk and Benefits, Payroll Operations, Tax Operations, Union Payroll, and Customer Success/Support to understand pain points and requirements. Translate operational needs into technical solutions, and maintain an open feedback loop so that the tools remain effective and user-centric.

What you'll have:

  • Experience in Automation & Scripting: 3–5 years of experience in software engineering or a related field, with a focus on building automations or internal tools. Proficiency in writing scripts or services in Python and/or JavaScript to glue together APIs and automate tasks.

  • No-Code/Low-Code Proficiency: Hands-on experience with automation platforms such as Zapier, Make, or n8n. Ability to create complex multi-step workflows that integrate cloud apps without heavy coding.

  • AI Integration Knowledge: Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and experience utilizing AI APIs or SDKs. Knowledge of LLMs (Large Language Models) and natural language processing.

  • Systems & API Integration: Comfortable working with RESTful APIs and webhooks to connect disparate systems. Experience integrating with enterprise tools like Salesforce (APIs or Apex) or similar platforms. Bonus if you have have built AI agents for workplace productivity.

  • Problem-Solving & Adaptability: Strong ability to translate business process challenges into technical solutions. Demonstrated creativity in prototyping solutions quickly, and persistence in iterating based on feedback. Able to juggle multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Testing and Data Handling: Experience in testing automation workflows and ensuring data integrity across systems. Some familiarity with handling sensitive data securely

  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication skills to work with non-technical stakeholders. Ability to gather requirements, explain technical concepts in simple terms, and present demos of tools. You are a team player who can work across departmental boundaries.

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience in automation/AI engineering. Relevant certifications in AI or Salesforce (or other platforms) are nice to have but not required.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
