AI Intern

Founding AI Team Reporting Directly to Partner

Want to build fast, ship real products, and make a visible impact at a leading private equity firm? This role is for you.

About the Role
K1 is hiring an AI Intern to help launch our internal AI function in Manhattan Beach, CA. This isn’t a standard internship. You’ll be one of our founding team members, working directly with a Founding Partner with no layers of management, no busywork, and genuine ownership from your first day. You’ll operate where AI, enterprise software, and private equity operations meet, delivering working automations and tools that create measurable impact across a portfolio of 275+ companies. Top performers can convert to full-time roles with the opportunity to build and lead their own team. The ideal candidate reflects K1’s core values: Passion, Persistence, Humility, and Excellence.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build, and deploy AI-driven automations using Claude, Microsoft 365 (Power Automate, Copilot, SharePoint), and custom integrations that replace manual work across the firm and its portfolio companies
  • Quickly prototype AI tools and agents, from competitive intelligence scrapers to board-report generators, and refine them based on feedback from real users
  • Assess new AI models, tools, and frameworks and turn your findings into clear, practical recommendations for the investment team
  • Create internal dashboards, data pipelines, and agentic workflows that give K1’s investors a real edge
  • Take on additional projects as needed

What We’re Looking For

  • Recent 2026 graduate or graduating in 2027, and based in the Los Angeles area.
  • Currently pursuing (or recently completed) a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Business + CS, or a related field
  • At least one internship or substantial project in AI/ML, software engineering, or data science
  • Daily, hands-on experience with Claude (Anthropic), including prompt engineering, multi-step workflows, and applying it to real tasks
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 (Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams); experience with Power Automate or Copilot Studio is a bonus
  • Proficiency in Python and/or JavaScript. You don’t need to be a systems engineer, but you do need to ship code that works
  • A bias for action, comfort with ambiguity, and real curiosity about where AI is going
  • Availability to work in-office in Manhattan Beach 3+ days per week; 5 days preferred.

Why K1

  • Direct access to a Founding Partner, with no bureaucracy in between
  • A fast track to full-time work, including the chance to build your own team
  • Exposure across 275+ enterprise software companies
  • Scheduling that works around your classes
  • Competitive hourly pay

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
