The AI Founding Engineer will develop AI capabilities, mentor team members, and guide architectural decisions for AI applications in products.
The summary above was generated by AI

At NetBox Labs, we’re building the future of network automation. Our products power the network source of truth for thousands of organizations, from fast-growing startups to global enterprises. We’re now looking for a hands-on, technically experienced AI/ML engineer to help us bring intelligent, context-aware capabilities to our product suite — and establish the foundation for our AI function.

About the Role:

This is a founding role on a new AI initiative at NetBox Labs. You’ll be exploring and delivering AI-powered product features that make network and infrastructure management easier, faster, and more intelligent, while bringing your subject matter expertise to help shape our technical direction, identify high-value opportunities, and guide architectural decisions from the ground up.

We’re not looking for someone to simply prototype — we need someone who can ship. You’ll take ownership of the full lifecycle of intelligent features, from experimentation and modeling to production deployment and iteration. Your work will directly shape how our users and customers interact with and realize value from NetBox Labs products.

You’ll also play a key role in establishing patterns, processes, architecture, and internal knowledge that allow us to scale AI efforts across the company over time.

What You'll Do:
  • Design and build foundational AI capabilities and intelligent systems that support both user-facing features and new product experiences across our platform

  • Collaborate with product and engineering to define problems worth solving with AI/ML

  • Lay technical foundations that enable scalable, secure, and repeatable use of AI

  • Explore and implement agentic solutions where appropriate, enabling autonomous or semi-autonomous capabilities in our products

  • Educate and mentor team members on AI/ML principles, techniques, and best practices to build company-wide fluency

  • Serve as the team's AI expert, keep up to date with broader AI engineering trends, and help guide the evolution of the AI function as we grow

About You:
  • 5+ years of experience building AI- or ML-powered features in production systems

  • Hands-on experience with LLMs, agentic architectures, or similar generative AI technologies applied to real-world problems

  • Strong Python engineering skills; comfort working in backend systems (Golang a plus)

  • Experience integrating with products implemented with AWS, Kubernetes, Postgres, Clickhouse, microservices, and event driven architectures

  • Experience shipping and supporting AI-driven features or ML models in production environments

  • Comfortable in ambiguity — able to explore, validate, and narrow down problem spaces

  • Collaborative, pragmatic, and product-oriented

  • Experience working cross-functionally with product, engineering and other stakeholders

  • 2+ years of experience working in a B2B SaaS startup environment or similarly fast-paced, high-ownership setting

Our culture and values:
  • We own and solve problems with high attention to detail.

  • Our open source contributors, users, customers & team are all part of our community. When our community wins, we win.

  • We prioritize simplicity and think twice before adding complexity

  • Clear communication helps keep our team aligned and collaborating smoothly.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
