About the role

We are seeking an Accounting Manager – Systems and Optimization to serve as the functional owner of the systems and tools that power Zillow’s accounting close. In this role, you’ll collaborate closely with our Finance Technology team—who owns technical administration—while guiding the strategic direction, configuration oversight, and overall effectiveness of these platforms. You'll play a key role in shaping how we can enable a faster, more scalable, and insight-driven close process through automation, data, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate brings a solid foundation in accounting, hands-on ERP experience, and a passion for exploring innovative solutions—like automation and AI—to drive process transformation across the organization.

You Will:Functional Leadership & Change Management
  • Serve as Accounting’s primary functional representative to Finance Technology for Workday and other close-enablement tools.

  • Contribute to roadmap planning by surfacing evolving business needs and helping prioritize system enhancements that align with Accounting’s goals.

  • Design, implement, and deliver training, documentation, and change communications to empower Accounting team members and strengthen system proficiency and adoption.

System Governance & Administration
  • Own accounting-specific application configurations, process logic, data governance, and related change management activities such as ticketing, testing and review.

  • Partner with Finance Technology on large-scale change management initiatives, such as Workday releases—assessing impact, performing testing, and coordinating deployment and communication across Accounting teams.

  • Apply strong working knowledge of security roles, segregation of duties, and sensitive system access to inform approval of accounting-related security changes and execution of quarterly user access reviews.

Process Optimization & Close Acceleration
  • Partner with Accounting teams and analyze operating metrics to understand how tools are being used, identifying opportunities to improve workflows and drive efficiency.

  • Identify and drive automation and AI-powered solutions that reduce effort, enhance accuracy, and support scalable workflows.

  • Oversee and continuously optimize Workday’s consolidation and foreign currency processes, including org structure, entity configurations, and translation logic.

Data Integrity & Reporting Enablement
  • Maintain expertise on Workday accounting data structures and how they support downstream financial reporting and analytics.

  • Support light reporting and dashboarding in Workday; partner with the Finance Analytics team on broader data, reporting, AI or other automation initiatives.

  • Ensure reliable, well-structured data by enforcing strong system controls and governance that support business insight and reporting accuracy.

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.

In California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $109,000.00 - $174,000.00 annually. This base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations. In Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Vermont the standard base pay range for this role is $103,500.00 - $165,300.00 annually. The base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location. Employees in this role will not be paid below the salary threshold for exempt employees in the state where they reside.

Who you are
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, or related field.

  • 5+ years of experience in/or supporting Accounting or Finance, including system implementation and month-end close responsibilities.

  • Hands-on experience as a functional owner or power user of accounting systems (e.g., Workday Financials, FloQast), including involvement in configuration, testing, and optimization.

  • Strong understanding of accounting processes including foreign currency translation, consolidation, internal controls (SOX), and intercompany relationships.

  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills; able to translate between technical teams and business stakeholders.

  • Comfortable working independently, collaborating across teams, and driving systems innovation and continuous improvement.

Bonus Qualifications
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent certification.

  • Experience with Alteryx or other automation/workflow tools used in accounting operations.

  • Familiarity with Jira, ServiceNow, or other issue/request tracking systems

  • Exposure to ERP implementations or upgrades, particularly within high-growth or matrixed organizations.
