About xAI

xAI’s mission is to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge. Our team is small, highly motivated, and focused on engineering excellence. This organization is for individuals who appreciate challenging themselves and thrive on curiosity. We operate with a flat organizational structure. All employees are expected to be hands-on and to contribute directly to the company’s mission. Leadership is given to those who show initiative and consistently deliver excellence. Work ethic and strong prioritization skills are important. All employees are expected to have strong communication skills. They should be able to concisely and accurately share knowledge with their teammates.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

As a Technical Accounting Subject-Matter Expert, you will apply deep technical accounting and professional practice experience to support the development of xAI’s next-generation artificial intelligence systems. In this role, you will contribute rigorous technical accounting analysis, clear written explanations, and sound professional judgment that help train AI models to address complex, non-routine accounting issues.

Working closely with engineering and research teams, you will evaluate sophisticated accounting scenarios and guide how AI systems interpret and apply authoritative U.S. GAAP, SEC guidance, and company-level accounting policy considerations. Your contributions will directly impact the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of AI-generated accounting conclusions.

You will draw on hands-on experience across technical financial reporting areas—such as revenue recognition, business combinations, consolidations, equity compensation, leases, financial instruments, and disclosures—to analyze challenging fact patterns similar to those encountered in Big 4 engagements, national office consultations, or technical accounting memo development.

This role is well suited for technical accounting professionals who thrive in fast-paced, intellectually demanding environments and are comfortable working with evolving prompts, guidance, and objectives. Success requires the ability to exercise professional judgment under ambiguity, clearly document accounting conclusions, and adapt quickly to iterative feedback, much like supporting complex client transactions or responding to emerging accounting standards and SEC interpretations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Use proprietary software applications to provide input/labels on defined projects.
  • Support and ensure the delivery of high-quality curated data.
  • Play a pivotal role in supporting and contributing to the training of new tasks, working closely with the technical staff to ensure the successful development and implementation of cutting-edge initiatives/technologies.
  • Interact with the technical staff to help improve the design of efficient annotation tools.
  • Choose problems from corporate accounting fields that align with your expertise, providing rigorous solutions and model critiques where you can confidently provide detailed solutions and evaluate model responses.
  • Regularly interpret, analyze, and execute tasks based on given instructions.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in technical accounting, audit, or accounting advisory roles within a public accounting firm or specialized accounting advisory practice, with exposure to complex GAAP and SEC-reporting environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and apply U.S. GAAP and other authoritative guidance to non-routine or judgment-intensive accounting issues.
  • Strong written communication skills in English, with the ability to document accounting conclusions clearly and logically.
  • Proficiency in navigating authoritative accounting resources, including FASB Codification, SEC EDGAR, public-company filings, and accounting policy documentation.
  • Strong analytical judgment and the ability to reach defensible accounting conclusions in situations involving ambiguity or incomplete information.
  • Interest in applying technical accounting expertise to emerging technologies and AI-driven accounting analysis.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • CPA license in good standing.
  • Experience in national office, technical accounting advisory, or SEC-focused roles, including ownership of complex or novel accounting issues.
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing, reviewing, or approving technical accounting memoranda, accounting policies, or position papers for significant transactions or reporting matters.
  • Deep familiarity with SEC disclosure requirements, including hands-on review of 10-K/10-Q footnotes, critical accounting policies, or MD&A from a technical accounting perspective.
  • Teaching, training, or mentoring experience in advanced or technical accounting topics, including firm-level technical training or academic instruction.
  • Contributions to professional thought leadership, such as publications, presentations, or firm-issued accounting guidance.
LOCATION AND OTHER EXPECTATIONS:
  • Tutor roles may be offered as full-time, part-time, or contractor positions, depending on role needs and candidate fit.
  • For contractor positions, hours will vary widely based on project scope and contractor availability, with no fixed commitments required.  On average most projects may involve at least 10 hours per week to achieve deliverables effectively though this is not a fixed commitment and depends on the scope of work. Contractors have full flexibility to set their own hours and determine the exact amount of time needed to complete deliverables.
  • Tutor roles may be performed remotely from any location worldwide, subject to legal eligibility, time-zone compatibility, and role specific needs.
  • For US based candidates, please note we are unable to hire in the states of Wyoming and Illinois at this time.
  • We are unable to provide visa sponsorship.
  • For those who will be working from a personal device, your computer must be a Chromebook, Mac with MacOS 11.0 or later, or Windows 10 or later.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

US based candidates: $45/hour - $100/hour depending on factors including relevant experience, skills, education, geographic location, and qualifications. International candidates: Information will be provided to you during the recruitment process.

Benefits vary based on employment type, location and jurisdiction. Benefits for eligible U.S. based positions include health insurance, 401(k) plan, and paid sick leave. Specific details and role specific information will be provided to you during the interview process.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
