Hi! 👋 I’m Val Bartlett, VP of Sales at TLDR.
If you’re reading this, you’re someone who knows what it takes to drive account retention and build relationships that matter. I’m looking for an Account Manager to join us to drive value, engagement, and growth within our key accounts. You’ll be working directly with me and our Sales team as we shape how TLDR partners with the biggest names in tech and media. I've worked at companies like TikTok and Lattice, and believe in activating people's highest potential to achieve their goals.

Who We Are

TLDR is a collective of technical newsletters on startups, software engineering, AI, cybersecurity, marketing, product management, and more, with over 5 million subscribers.

Our mission is to build the paper of record for technical fields, the trusted source that people who work in tech rely on to inform them about important trends and developments.

About the role

  • Client Relationships: Be the face of TLDR for our clients, leading post-sale engagement and building trust.

  • Campaign Oversight: Manage accounts from onboarding through campaign completion, aligning with client goals and maintaining a seamless, high-quality experience.

  • Client Advocacy: Act as the voice of our clients within TLDR, bringing valuable insights that help refine our services.

  • Project Management: Work closely with our creative team to ensure ad content aligns with client goals and TLDR standards.

  • Upselling and Growth: Identify upselling opportunities by highlighting additional value through TLDR’s unique advertising options.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work alongside sales, ops, and creative teams to resolve client issues swiftly and maximize satisfaction.

  • Performance Analysis: Regularly assess and report on campaign performance, keeping clients informed and setting up future opportunities.

  • Industry Expertise: Stay up-to-date with trends and best practices to provide clients with forward-thinking advice and keep TLDR competitive.

About You

  • 2+ years of Account Management or Sales experience in the media/advertising industry

  • Client Engagement: Strong relationship-building skills, with a talent for handling complex client conversations and finding win-win solutions.

  • Collaboration: Comfortable working with cross-functional teams to achieve shared goals.

  • Emotional Intelligence: High EQ, empathy, and active listening skills to better serve clients.

  • Ability to operate in a highly ambiguous, fast-paced collaborative environment

You're not a good fit for this role if you:

  • Haven't worked in media/advertising industry

  • Rely on lots of direction for how to drive retention with clients

  • Enjoy large teams and that "in-person group feeling" at work

  • Prefer to have a manager give you clear instructions or a target account list each day

  • Don't have much knowledge or experience of the tech ecosystem

Why You'll Love It

  • Competitive base salary plus additional performance-based compensation

  • 100% Remote Company that shares a common goal

  • Annual team offsite. In 2024 we went to Colorado. Tell us where we should go next!

  • Unlimited PTO - most team members will enjoy 2-3 weeks off per year + holidays

  • 401(k) plan

  • Comprehensive medical, dental and vision benefits with 100% paid option

  • Paid parental leave

  • Hardware stipend - we're on Macbook Pro M3s, get a new monitor, headset, chair on us

  • Learning & Development stipend - we are a curious group that believes in learning

  • Contemporary tech stack and tools

  • Autonomy and agency to contribute to the growth of one of the largest newsletters in the world.

📥 If you're ready to make a tremendous impact at a bootstrapped and profitable startup, please apply.

What We Value

  • REMOTE WORK! We don't have an office. Work from a US timezone.

  • Urgency and Bias to Action

  • Iterative improvement

  • Clear communication

  • Integrity

  • Resourcefulness

Please let us know if you need any accommodation during any part of the interview process.

What you need to know about the Los Angeles Tech Scene

Los Angeles is a global leader in entertainment, so it’s no surprise that many of the biggest players in streaming, digital media and game development call the city home. But the city boasts plenty of non-entertainment innovation as well, with tech companies spanning verticals like AI, fintech, e-commerce and biotech. With major universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and the nearby UC Irvine, the city has a steady supply of top-flight tech and engineering talent — not counting the graduates flocking to Los Angeles from across the world to enjoy its beaches, culture and year-round temperate climate.

Key Facts About Los Angeles Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 375,800; 5.5% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Snap, Netflix, SpaceX, Disney, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, adtech, media, software, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $11.6 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Strong Ventures, Fifth Wall, Upfront Ventures, Mucker Capital, Kittyhawk Ventures
  • Research Centers and Universities: California Institute of Technology, UCLA, University of Southern California, UC Irvine, Pepperdine, California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, Center for Quantum Science and Engineering
