Job Description

Under the management of the commercial sales manager, the commercial buyer will be responsible for the following: 

  • You are responsible for purchases of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal from industrial accounts
  • You are negotiating with suppliers on price, payment and shipment terms and contracts to optimize cost effectiveness.
  • You are responsible for follow-up and shipment expedites with suppliers to ensure on-time delivery.
  • You will be vetting, and interacting with new potential sources of consumers of scrap metal. Buys from retail, dealer, light industrial customers, repair shops, demolition projects, clean-ups, etc.
  • You will participate in a database of qualified leads through referrals, telephone canvassing, direct mail, email & networking.
  • You will maintain frequent communications with suppliers for updated lead-time and inventory info for proper planning.
  • You will be keeping accurate records of relevant activities.
  • You will internal and external customer service relating to ferrous or non-ferrous business.
  • You will develop the growth of business activities and profit with assigned accounts.
  • You will provide solutions to companies to improve and maximize scrap recovery.
  • You are responsible for meeting or exceeding buying/sourcing quotas.
  • You can exercise a working knowledge of materials and sources of supply to make purchases at prices consistent with quality, delivery and quantity requirements.
  • You can processe requests for price quotations, purchase orders, order changes, adjustments, and cancellations directly with vendors and manufacturers.
  • You can maximize all opportunities in the process of closing a deal, resulting in the taking of market share from competitors

Qualifications

Job Knowledge, Skill and Ability Preferences        

  • Must have working knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English is preferred
  • Must have strong sales skills and strive to develop long-term customer relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, telephone etiquette and computer knowledge.
  • Maintain knowledge of market factors that scrap metal price movements.
  • Must be able to negotiate prices, service and terms with both customers and carriers.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Must display strong motivation and resourcefulness; be self-motivated.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Willing to work varying hours and travel up to 50% of the time.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
