Location – Irvine, CA
Purpose:
The Sr. Backup and Storage Engineer is responsible for the design, installation, configuration, maintenance, and administration of enterprise backup and storage systems. This role ensures that infrastructure environments meet availability, security, and performance requirements. The engineer will lead operational support efforts, project implementations, vendor coordination, and backup strategy design across a multi-site hybrid environment.
The ideal candidate has 7-10 years of experience with Dell EMC PowerMax, NetApp, Pure Storage, Data Domain, Dell Networker, Veritas NetBackup, Veeam, Brocade switches, and tape library systems such as i6/i9, along with cloud storage technologies including AWS S3. Experience with backup strategy development, immutable backups, encryption at rest, and managing backups cross Unix, RHEL, Solaris, Windows, and NAS file systems are essential
Essential Functions:
 
  • Ensure high availability and performance of backup and storage infrastructure via service level adherence.
  • Design, deploy, administer, and support on-prem and hybrid backup and storage systems.
  • Install, configure, and maintain enterprise systems including NetBackup, Networker, Data Domain, Pure Storage, PowerMax, NetApp, and Veeam.
  • Implement and monitor immutable backup strategies and encryption at rest mechanisms for data security.
  • Perform backup, restore, replication, and recovery operations across mixed OS environments.
  • Provision, manage, and maintain SAN/NAS storage systems and fiber-channel infrastructure using Brocade switches.
  • Manage cloud backup storage such as AWS S3, Azure Blob, and hybrid backup architecture.
  • Lead efforts for secure handling of physical media, tape management (i6/i9 libraries), and offsite storage via Iron Mountain.##Define and implement backup, retention, and disaster recovery standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design scalable and compliant storage solutions.
  • Monitor, analyze, and optimize storage performance and utilization; perform capacity planning and forecasting.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation including designs, SOPs, runbooks, asset records, and configuration logs.
  • Mentor junior engineers and serve as a technical escalation point for complex issues.
  • Participate in On-Call rotation, incident response, and change management reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, patching, licensing, and data retention policies.
Other Duties:
  • Track physical and virtual storage assets, licensing, leases, warranties, and servicecontracts.
  • Ensure infrastructure systems are aligned with security standards and audit requirements.
  • Coordinate with vendors and MSPs to ensure SLA compliance and system health.
  • Participate in lifecycle planning, solution evaluations, and capacity forecasting.
  • Identify and implement changes for performance improvement and cost efficiency.
  • Securing and hardening of backup/ storage systems.
  • Container/Virtualization awareness, experience with cross functional technologies VMWare, Hyper-V, Kubernetes, Gitlab etc.
  • Disaster recovery testing and planning.
  • Data Center Migration experience is desired, should be able to diagram the strategy, capacity etc.

Requirements:

 
  • Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in enterprise backup, storage engineering, and disaster recovery.
  • Strong understanding of SAN/NAS architectures, block/file storage, and storage tiering strategies.
  • Advanced expertise in Dell EMC PowerMax, NetApp, Pure Storage, Dell Networker, Veritas NetBackup, Data Domain, and other respective backup / storage technologies.
  • Experience with Brocade FC switches, zoning, and fabric management.
  • Experience managing and maintaining i6/i9 tape libraries, including cataloging, labeling, and offsite management.
  • Cloud storage experience with AWS S3, Glacier, Azure Blob, or other object-based platforms.
  • Familiarity with backup and recovery for UNIX (AIX, RHEL, Solaris) and Windows environments.
  • Strong understanding of High Availability (HA), Disaster Recovery (DR), and Business Continuity Planning (BCP).
  • Working knowledge of NAS/ DFS, Files shares and Permissions.
  • Experience contributing to infrastructure project planning and execution.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and collaborate cross-functionally.
Additional Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to support infrastructure services across large-scale environments.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team across distributed environments.
  • Highly motivated with a focus on process improvement and automation.
  • Experience with scripting or automation tools to streamline backup/storage operations (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Ansible).
  • Familiarity with monitoring and alerting platforms to ensure availability and performance of storage/backup systems.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance standards (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR, SOX) related to storage and
  • backup.
  • Experience with snapshot, clone, and replication technologies for backup and DR.
  • Proven experience architecting hybrid cloud backup and recovery solutions.

Certifications:
Preferred certifications: Dell EMC Proven Professional, NetBackup/Veeam, AWS, ITIL Foundation.
Salary Range - $103,170 - $158,873
