From English teacher to security engineer

Alex J. has always loved technology; as a teacher, he integrated new tech tools to make learning fun whenever possible. Despite coming to DRW slightly inexperienced for his desktop support engineer position, the nurturing environment he encountered at the company helped him thrive. “My manager gave me ample opportunity to try new things, make mistakes and learn from my own experiences,” he said. That room to grow — along with instructor-led training for his CompTIA Security+ certification and support from colleagues — prepared him to level up to his current role.

Working on cloud-hosted sites with easy access to APIs offers Emma D. many opportunities to experiment with new technology, but her colleagues play a role in innovation as well. “My team lead is the biggest influence for me when it comes to engaging with new tech,” she said. “He follows the frameworks and libraries we use religiously.” In addition, she is supported in her experimentation through DRW’s professional development budget, which she plans to use to take workshops and college classes to learn about and practice using new tech tools.
