A SoCal startup that uses machine learning to match patients to clinical trials, Deep 6 AI is building an artificial intelligence platform to accelerate life-saving research. “Our customers are the world’s leading academic medical centers, cancer centers and top clinical research sites, and I work with them on how to measure real value, which means getting more patients enrolled,” said VP of Operations Rachel Helfont Heiss. Results matter, in other words, as does ensuring Deep 6 team members see the impact of their work firsthand. “We’re integrating our technology into tools physicians use every day,” said Software Engineering Manager Jeff Skelton. “What we’re building matters and helps people. It doesn’t get much better than that.”

VP of Operations Rachel Helfont Heiss oversees customer-facing teams, but she’s also focused on fostering internal development as the company scales. This past year, she collaborated with leadership to develop job levels and career paths so that “every employee has a clear picture of their potential growth path, whether as expert individual contributors or team leaders,” she said. Aligning on employees’ goals early, then using quarterly check-ins to provide feedback and plan training sessions, Helfont Heiss aims for her colleagues and customers to feel valued and empowered in equal measure.

Coordinate closely with well-equipped tech teams

“At our heart, we’re a search engine,” said Software Engineering Manager Jeff Skelton, who likes to joke that his application squad “builds the shiny stuff” end users interact with. ElasticSearch, Postgres and DynamoDB are at his disposal, as is AWS and programming languages TypeScript and Kotlin. But in delivering a recent feature to give users a more granular view of search results, Skelton said cross-team collaboration mattered as much as the tech stack. “Everyone took ownership to make sure this feature was a success,” he said. “That speaks volumes about our culture. We’re all one team.”
