As video-making apps gain in popularity, major players in the space aren’t willing to be left behind. Only a few weeks after Twitter launched Vine, the video-sharing network it acquired last October, Vimeo announced today its acquisition of Echograph to plant a stake in the mobile short-form video space. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Unlike the six-second-long Vines, Echographs allow users to turn videos into still frames and then “erase” frozen bits with their finger to allow parts of the screen to be animated – creating a gorgeous gif-like image.

"We chose Echograph because it helps people easily create beautiful high quality video content," said Kerry Trainor, Vimeo CEO, according to a press release.  "That, with Nick's proven track record of building innovative video apps made it a perfect fit for Vimeo."

Previously, Echograph cost $2.99 in the App Store, but Vimeo says it will offer the app for free. Other changes include the appointment of Echograph creator Nick Alt to the position of Vice President of Mobile at Vimeo. The Echograph team will stay on, reporting to Vimeo president Dae Mellencamp, according to PC Magazine.
