What makes up the top 10 most subscribed to channels on YouTube is pretty clear. Four of the top 10 YouTube channels are VEVO music videos channels for pop stars Katy Perry, Eminem, Rihanna and One Direction. Five out of 10 channels are made up of home grown comedians like PewDiePie. One channel is the ‘YouTube Spotlight’ channel.

Though it is probably safe to assume many of the views going to the VEVO music video channels are simply people using YouTube as a free music player, the views going to the comedians point out what is unique to YouTube.

What is unique to YouTube is a sense of authenticity. Perhaps the best-known secret to YouTube stardom is the importance of sincerity. The comedians in the top ten rarely change their appearance at all before shooting their videos. They are often shooting in their kitchen, pajamas or on-the-fly, and in addition to their hilarious antics and commentary is why they have so many die-hard fans.

It is also worth noting that none of these comedian acts are part of a Multi-Channel Network, which many LA tech startups facilitate. Each of these comedian channels are based around a strong personality that primarily came up on their own. MCNs offer marketing and production help for YouTube stars that tend to have potential but have not yet made the leap to self-sufficiency. These independent content creators appear to have tapped into an audience on their own and don't need the support of a MCN. In fact, many of them have spun out separated affiliated channels to further distribute their content.

Because Los Angeles content creators are so important to YouTube we wanted to give you a peek into the wild and new ecosystem that is taking the tech world for a loop; here are the top 10 YouTube channels by subscription according to Social Blade.
