The 2nd annual Silicon Beach Fest in Santa Monica is revving up its pre-event activities. This year, the startup tech entertainment festival kicks off with a Hackathon beginning tomorrow evening, where developers in the LA area work together to create an app in 48 hours, a sort of tech version of the 48 Hour Film Project. AT&T, who sponsors dozens of Hackathons nationwide, is teaming with EventBrite to coordinate the event.

The Hackathon certainly keeps within the spirit of the festival, giving the opportunity for developers in the LA startup community to network and work on new projects. They’re expecting a high turnout. “This year is going to be bigger and better,” says Nathan Chandra, an AT&T developer assisting with the organization of the event. “We have over 275 RSVPs. We’re excited…it’s a great event for the developer community here.” Chandra is also one of the judges of the competition. Other judges include Ilya Pozin, Reed Shaffner, and David Waxman.

They’re not just excited about attendance. The Hackathon will be giving away $20,000 in cash and prizes, a virtual steal since the cost of registration is free. Click here to register.

This being LA, the entertainment angle isn’t lost on the event. Besides the 275+ attendees, there will be a film crew from the production company Super Creative recording the Hackathon as it happens. “They’re putting a sort of pilot together, so we’re excited to see what comes from that,” says Chandra.

So short of the $20,000 in prizes, at the very least, programmers may be the stars of a pilot.
