Roam, a user-based event discovery app, launched in LA this week as the new comer to a crowded pool of local event-based apps.

But while most event apps cater to the venues or artists, Roam is focused on what content a user wants to experience, showing them any close-by concerts, happy hours, or live events that match their interests.

“We put ourselves in the shoes of the user and have them view what is going on around them in real time,” said cofounder and CEO Michael Cummings. “We also realized that there is a huge need on the business side of this. Even large organizations like the Dodgers and LiveNation still have trouble activating new customers to come to their events.”

The app gained 300 new users in the first day and Cummings expects a few thousand by year’s end. The company is currently a two-man operation in Santa Monica and the duo has been programmatically and manually adding events to get the app started. As more users join, the app will organically build itself out as different venues market their shows.

Since the app is focused on nearby events, the company is taking  a hyper-local approach by targeting smaller pockets of the city before marketing it broadly.
