We think that working at Smarkets is pretty cool, but it’s hard to boast about it if you can’t see what it’s like here at HQ in London.
Sure, you can tell people about the penthouse view over St Katharine Docks — gorgeous on a clear day— the food cooked by our three amazing chefs and much more, but it’s easier to just show them.
We want to innovate the backwards betting industry with our tech-focused event exchange, but also pioneer a new kind of workplace, where trust is the driving force and intelligent staff are given the freedom to shape their future with the company.
To do this, we aim to provide a collaborative environment where employees are not restrained by unnecessary bureaucracy. There are no middle-managers or exhaustive food chains that staff must grapple with to implement ideas and change.
Our team has doubled from 40 to 80 in a year and we now have 25 different nationalities at the company. As the team grows, it is naturally more difficult to interact with everyone at the company, but we do make a real effort to ensure that cliques aren’t formed.
On the last Friday of every month we have a party and the team regularly organise social events and play sports outside of work to bond further with their colleagues.
We also have chefs who prepare fantastic breakfast and lunch, and every day we sit together at 1pm to bond over whatever Tony, Helen and Alex have cooked up (expect to see quite a few food pictures on Instagram!). After that, there’s Mario Kart, FIFA, card games or just general chit-chat — whatever takes your fancy.
