5G is going to be the future of wireless technology. It will mean faster internet browsing speeds on your smartphone and better service in crowded areas. People in the communications tech space have been buzzing about it for the past year or so, and now the promised technology is becoming a reality.

Companies like Movandi are the players behind the 5G push. Irvine-based Movandi creates the hardware and infrastructure for 5G networks, products like 5G BeamXR active routers/repeaters and BeamX RF front-end for fixed wireless devices. This kind of mobile infrastructure will help cities that are trying to build up their 5G coverage.

On Thursday, Movandi announced that it raised $27 million in a Series C funding round led by WRVI Capital. This new funding will help the company as it continues to build and deploy infrastructure for 5G networks. It will also help the company hire more people for its team.

“We’re at an exciting inflection point in 5G mmWave operator deployments, we’re both scaling our active router platform and RF front-end deployments,” Maryam Rofougaran, CEO and co-founder of Movandi, said in a statement. “We are working closely with 5G operators and system OEMs solving these 5G coverage challenges, by unlocking the true benefits of 5G that are only achieved with mmWave — that makes Movandi truly unique.”

Rofougaran founded Movandi with her brother Reza. The two siblings have decades of experience working on wireless technologies at Broadcom, where they helped pioneer new developments in the wireless industry. Together, they hold over 1,000 patents. The duo hopes to use this expertise to develop new technology at Movandi and innovate for the industry as a whole.
