Built In LA’s tech event guide: What you should be doing this summer

If you think you’re alone in wanting to sit in your air conditioned apartment for the rest of the summer, think again. The freeways are somehow busier than ever, and the idea of sitting in a dark room and watching Netflix hour after hour is more tempting than ever. But LA Tech has a ton going on — here’s what we’re looking forward to over the next few months.

 

The whole enchilada: 3 conferences to know

State of Digital Money 2017, July 22 - July 23 at 9 a.m.

It seems like a new cybersecurity breach is being reported every day, but while we all scramble to change the passwords on a few accounts to things we will actually remember, it’s easy to forget that more substantial things than our Starbucks reward account at risk. Featuring leaders from digital money, fintech, blockchain and cryptocurrency companies from around LA, this event will take a look into cyber attacks and how their industries are responding.

2017 Wonder Women Tech Diversity & Inclusion in STEAM Conference, August 18 - 20 at 8 p.m.

This August, Wonder Women Tech will hosts a conference dedicated to diversity and inclusion in STEAM. The event will feature a number of inspiring speakers, recruiting booths, career development workshops and more.

Tech Day Los Angeles, September 14 at 10 a.m.

Tech Day returns to LA this September with promises of assembling an all-star cast of startups, accelerators, investors and resources for several hours at The Reef in DTLA.

Challenge the status quo: Hackathons to look out for

Uncoded Hack Nights, every Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Every week, Uncoded hosts a hackathon at the WE Labs in Long Beach to encourage technological innovation and collaboration for the betterment of our tech community.

Hack for LA, every Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The City of Los Angeles has been a huge advocate for local tech startups, and local tech veterans are using their expertise to give back to the city they love. Each week, the LA Cleantech Incubator hosts a hackathon to gather the best and brightest to brainstorm ways to make LA better.

AT&T SHAPE, July 8 - July 9 at 3 p.m.

AT&T is fully immersing itself in LA Tech this summer with its SHAPE Hackathon, an event dedicated to virtual, mixed and augmented realities.

Hacking for Humanity - A Social Innovation Hackathon with Girls in Tech, September 14 - September 15 at 10 a.m.

This September, Girls in Tech Los Angeles teams up with the Linux Foundation to put on a hackathon designed to take on major social challenges facing various communities around the world. Everyone is invited to get together and help change the world.

Learn something new (and have fun doing it)

Latest Trends in Emerging Technologies, July 12 at 5 p.m.

Glendale Tech on Tap is a monthly event aimed at helping grow the tech community in Glendale. This month’s event will feature Glendale native and current resident Louie Sadd, the founder of Datastream IT and CBRE’s marketing manager Meagan Brazil to discuss emerging technologies and why certain types get more hype than others.

LA Tech & Startup Bash, August 31 at 6 p.m.

Hosted by the Founder Panel, this event will feature a little bit of everything: networking, drinking and eating, and the opportunity to connect with a wide variety of tech-related individuals. It will also feature a demo zone where you can check out some of the coolest new startups in LA.

An Evening with Flipboard Community Manager and Food Blogger Jenn de la Vega, September 22 at 7 p.m.

Flipboard’s community manager and food blogger Jenn de la Vega stops by The Last Bookstore in DTLA this September for a presentation that will feature powerpoint slides, snacks, wine, cooking and “a few surprises.”

Blow off some steam: the best tech happy hours in LA

Every few months, Built In LA partners with some of the coolest tech startups in LA for a night of cocktails, finger food and networking. Stay tuned for news on the next event!

Hollywood Tech Happy Hour, July 11 at 6 p.m. (twice a month)

Happy hours mean a lot of things. Networking, drinks, convenience and, of course, a good time. You don’t have to brave the rush hour traffic to make it down to Santa Monica or Marina Del Rey to find all of these things. Hosted by a revolving group of West Hollywood public houses, Hollywood Tech Happy Hour is a great way to meet other startup community members.

LA Tech Happy Hour, July 13 at 6 p.m. (every month)

Happy hours are great for expanding your network, both personally and professionally. LA Tech Happy Hour has developed into one of the premier tech gatherings in the area, with more than 10,000 members on Meetup.

South Bay Tech Happy Hour, July 27 at 6 p.m. (twice a month)

Santa Monica and Hollywood aren’t the only neighborhoods in LA County hosting regular tech-focused happy hours this summer. Organized by South Bay Tech Happy Hour, this bi-monthly gathering focuses on the South Bay communities.
