When it comes to getting work done, everyone appreciates time put back in their day to complete important tasks. GrayMatter Robotics builds robots that handle the more tedious jobs associated with manufacturing operations, giving shop floor workers more time to prioritize other projects. The company announced Tuesday a $20 million Series A funding round to further its tech.

The company builds intelligent robotic solutions that aim to help manufacturing businesses increase production capacity and save on costs. GrayMatter’s tech can automate complex surface finishing and treatment applications in high-mix, high-variability production environments, according to the company. Its AI tech works with off-the-shelf robots, sensors and tools to help companies reduce scrap and repair and rework costs.

“We are improving shop workers’ lives, enhancing their productivity and enabling them to focus on higher-value tasks,” Ariyan Kabir, GrayMatter co-founder and CEO, said in a statement. “Manufacturing drives our economy, and without automating surface finishing and treatment, there is a significant risk the global economy may suffer due to the increasing labor shortage.”

GrayMatter’s latest funding round, led by Bow Capital, will help it expand its team to meet increased customer demand. Investors including B Capital Group, Calibrate Ventures and Swift Ventures also participated in this round.

Its technology powers its Scan&Sand system, a large robotic arm capable of finishing the surface of parts, such as those for vehicles. The automated robot can scan a part and sand it down so that it suits what the operator wants. To do this, parts are first placed in a robotic cell for Scan&Sand to scan it and generate an online model of the piece. From there, it programs the robot’s motion and uses sensors to monitor its sanding performance to ensure consistent quality.

“We are a next-generation automation company shaping the future of work with smart robots,” Brual Shah, GrayMatter co-founder and CTO, said in a statement. “Automating surface finishing and treatment applications for mission-critical production environments poses some extremely challenging engineering problems in AI and robotics. It is fascinating for our team to see how our day-to-day work is immediately impacting a wide range of industries from recreational equipment to aerospace.”

GrayMatter is actively hiring for a variety of roles with the majority spanning engineering. It’s also on the lookout for talent across project management, UX design and more. The new funding will also help GreyMatter expand its operations and accelerate the development and deployment of its next-generation AI robotic solutions.
