THE PURPOSE:

Principal Robotics Engineer will technically lead and deliver a pose estimation system to Hyperloop One. The pose estimation system is a composite of sensor suites and software that provides other sub-systems in Hyperloop One with information about where a pod is and how it is oriented with respect to a reference coordination system. Without such information, it is impossible to locate where each of the pods is travelling in a hyperstructure.

A successful candidate should have extensive hands-on experience with perception systems in general, and specifically pose estimation/localization for any real-world applications/systems. He/she will be working through daily scrums with the Senior Director of Perception and with his/her teammates to execute the plans. He/she may occasionally interact with other team leads to solidify their requirements. He/she will be owning the Hyperloop One pose estimation system.

THE ROLE:

The success of this role will be measured by what he/she is delivering, by when, and how he/she technically leads each of their team members in order to reach each milestone. The accountability or responsibility of this role includes 1) architecting and writing boiler-plate or placeholder codes, if necessary, for team members, 2) coming up with detailed, mini-milestones or sprints based on perception milestones and overseeing them, 3) addressing and coming up with solutions for the problems under investigation, and 4) leading/managing projects of individual contributors.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

A successful candidate for this role should have extensive, hand-on experience in building any systems for pose estimation, visual odometry, localization, SLAM, multi-target tracking, and any perception system relevant to pose estimation.

Upon arrival, a successful candidate should already have in-depth understanding and hands-on experience with perception stack, theories on field-robotics, and related fields of study. He/she should be a collaborator, instead of a learner, and a creative thinker firmly anchored at solid understanding of the related fields of study. The list of the theories and practices he/she should be very familiar with includes estimation theory, machine learning (particularly graphical model), linear algebra, kinematics, vector calculus, computer vision, etc. In addition to these, any field experience would be very desirable.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in robotics, computer science, electrical engineering, or any related fields of study.
  • Five to six years combined graduate academic and industrial experience in field robotics and any related industries.
  • Extensive, demonstrable experience in writing codes for any of the following systems: SLAM, visual odometry, or localization.
  • Hands-on experience in writing codes for processing any types of active and passive sensor data. Examples of active sensors include lidar and radar. An example of a passive sensor includes a camera.
  • Proficient in software engineering using C++ in any of Linux distributions (e.g., Ubuntu).
  • Supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including development and delivery of presentations, technical documents, and/or proposals.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • PhD degree in robotics, computer science or electrical engineering.
  • Experience with GPU programming, ROS
  • Experience in writing codes for any of the following systems: sensor fusion, multi-target, tracking system, computer vision algorithms for object recognition.
  • Experience with Agile or any other SW development methodologies.
  • Experience with Python, shell scripts.
  • Hands-on experience in working on any types of active and passive sensor data acquisition pipeline.
  • Any publication records on related fields.
