Power Systems Engineer
The Power Electronics team at Hyperloop-One is responsible of delivering controllable electric power to wherever it is needed. Providing power to a Hyperloop system is a little bit more than plugging into wall sockets at your home. We work on design and development of power electronics equipment such as variable speed drives and thyristor switches, power distribution system and infrastructure, and all other supporting electrical equipment and apparatus. We are building a multi-disciplinary team, including electrical, electronics, mechanical, thermal, and control expertise, to execute and deliver from concepts to functional products.
We are seeking experienced engineers in power electronics from concept to product, embedded program development, complex assembly mechanical and thermal design, power system design, experience with product certification.
Responsibilities
- Substation Design and Engineering: One-line, detailed physical layouts, selection of substation equipment, create bid and construction drawing packages.
- Design and develop Hyperloop grid interconnection power systems, and propulsion distribution systems fed by variable speed drives.
- Perform cable ampacity, grounding, short-circuit, arc-flash, and lightning calculations
- Design grounding system
- Design fault protection system
- Design lightning protection system
- Specify power cables and equipment based on analysis results, manufacturer datasheets, site and installation constraints, schedule and cost.
- Work with vendors to select power equipment, such as medium voltage switchgear, relays, transformers, enclosures, power cables, cable terminations, insulators, surge protection devices, and reactive compensation devices.
- Review wiring diagrams from power equipment suppliers
- Develop drawings for electrical one line diagram, equipment layout and elevation arrangement, as well as trench and conduit design
- Work with field engineers to review equipment installation, wiring, and perform protective relay settings
Requirements
- Power system engineering experience in medium voltage high power industries, such as utility substations, industrial plants, and railway power systems.
- Experience with railway power distribution system design is highly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of power distribution system modelling and analysis.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of insulation coordination, thermal damage limits of transformers, motors and cables
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of system behavior during electrical shorts, voltage fluctuations, and arc flash.
- Must have a good knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC), and relevant IEEE and IEC standards.
- Experience with some of the following software: PSS/E, ETAP, SKM PTW, CDEGs, PSCAD, ATP-EMTP, Matlab/Simulink, CYME/PSAF
- P.Eng. designation is desired.
