When David Jun left Samsung after 10 years, he had a strong vision for the future of smartphone video sharing. With the growing popularity of Periscope and Meerkat, Jun noticed a trend towards live streaming and a world in which smartphones could act as a “second set of eyes.”

In late 2014 he founded Airelive, a social-media based communication platform that combines live streaming, video chat, and messaging into one system. The platform currently has over 2 million members and just under a million original content posts.

Airelive allows users to control the public or private status of their videos and connect their live broadcasts to Facebook in real time, making it possible to go viral while you’re still filming. On the technical side, AireLive provides high quality audio and video on its proprietary enhanced RTS server, cutting down on lag and cost.

We sat down with Jun and discussed the growing trend toward live streaming apps:

What does the future hold for live streaming?

"The future of live streaming is brighter than ever. The ubiquitous and ever-so-powerful smartphone and high speed network environment are playing a huge role in live streaming. Additionally, today’s generation of users that are more comfortable sharing their lives with others in real time are expediting the growth of the industry."

What impact can it play on the upcoming presidential election?

"Live streaming has the potential to impact the presidential election unlike any other traditional mediums. There are several free live streaming apps available today, giving politicians a personal way to engage with voters through live streaming channels. With Hillary Clinton live streaming her first official campaign rally, I think we can expect to see a lot more of that moving forward. A high-tech platform is a great way to reach and engage younger voters."

Why does live streaming appeal to the average internet user? How do they benefit from it?

"With live streaming, users are able to see an unfiltered view of the world through the eyes of the broadcaster, making them feel even more connected. Instead of just watching a pre-recorded video or reading about a certain experience, users are now able to virtually live it."

Will LA's longtime connection to video production have an effect on the popularity of live streaming and video messaging?

"AireLive chose Los Angeles as the location for its headquarters for strategic reasons. Our proximity to quality content creators and production companies was of utmost importance. If there is any place in the world that is capable of generating unique, creative, world-class content, that is Los Angeles."
