Radiant Industries is an El Segundo, CA-based startup developing Kaleidos, a portable, containerized nuclear microreactor. Portable nuclear power with rapid deploy capability can replace diesel generators used today to provide critical asset support for hospitals, datacenters, and military bases or to power microgrids at remote sites. Radiant’s unique, practical approach to nuclear development utilizes modern software engineering to rapidly achieve safe, factory-constructable microreactors leveraging existing, well-qualified materials. Radiant is on a fast track to demonstrate the first fueled operation of a new commercial nuclear reactor design, just two years from now.

Systems Engineer – Regulatory

Radiant is seeking a driven, organized Regulatory Systems Engineer to manage the regulatory approval process with the Department of Energy and Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This role is critical to bringing the world’s first portable nuclear microreactor to commercialization in a timely manner. You will be a go to subject matter expert for the regulatory process and collaborate across technical teams to inform design, build and test campaigns. You will lead interactions between regulators and the engineering team to obtain clarity and answers on regulation. You will integrate analysis and test results from the design teams with compliment justifications and own the deliverables that make up a full license application. This is an exciting opportunity for systems engineers who enjoy both technical work and operational execution. You will have a direct impact on our modern regulatory strategy to bring the safest microreactor to market the fastest.

Responsibilities:

  • Own end to end licensing execution efforts required to fulfill an application deliverable, ranging from detailed safety analysis to a physical protection plan.
  • Facilitate collaborative and cohesive partnerships with internal stakeholders and external regulatory bodies (NRC, DOE) to drive desirable results using streamlined, modern regulatory approaches.
  • Oversee execution by technical teams including design reviews and regulatory and quality documentation; organize their inputs into data products and reports; raise regulatory concerns and see through timely and successful resolution.
  • Proactively review approaches and decisions as they relate to regulatory efforts to ensure adherence to Radiant’s novel and efficient licensing paths.
  • Ensure completeness, timeliness, and quality of licensing and regulatory submissions.
  • Write software scripts to automate and produce data analysis and documentation.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the following disciplines: nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or similar technical field from an accredited institution.
  • 2+ years of experience certifying, regulating, qualifying or auditing hardware that was manufactured, deployed, and iteratively improved.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and negotiation abilities; ability to navigate regulatory conversations effectively and write technical documentation.
  • Applied understanding of requirement derivation, negotiation and verification or experience with the product design process especially as it relates to defining systems, interfaces and specifications.

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience working in a regulatory environment with a device in production.
  • Demonstrated experience completing a 12+ month project with a government agency.
  • Experience working on a DOE or NRC regulated program.
  • Nuclear, aerospace, electrical, electronic, and industrial experiences is a plus.
  • Two years of experience tailoring or implementing NQA-1, SQA-1, ISO9001, AS9100, or other industrial standards.
  • Experience owning, designing, building, or testing hardware that has seen production.
  • Ability to apply fundamental engineering principles to regulatory efforts.
  • Strong ability to lead issues through resolution that may be ambiguous or uncertain in nature.
  • Excellent project management skills and driving schedules forward.
