Demand.io is a technology company based in Santa Monica, CA focused on building digital consumer shopping platforms and experiences that help consumers find and acquire the things they'll love.
Founded in 2009, we're a self-funded, profitable company running multiple e-commerce consumer products at scale, generating over $1B in annual transaction volume for our retail partners. Our success comes from our ability to innovate early, retain top talent through profit-sharing, and operate efficiently and decisively with an agile, lean startup ethos emphasizing profitability and sustainable, organic product growth.
As the e-commerce industry shifts from screen-based paradigms to newer AI-enabled conversation-driven ones, we're committed to delivering the industry's best AI shopping assistant through Product.ai. Leveraging open source foundation language models connected to our industry-leading e-commerce knowledge graph through emerging retriever-enhanced data systems, Product.ai aims to minimize hallucinations even for the most detailed e-commerce queries. Having procured our own A100 GPU server last year, we've ramped our ability to train, fine-tune, and evaluate our models at scale.
The opportunity
We're seeking no less than a unicorn product design leader to help us re-imagine the future of e-commerce, turn ambitious concepts into reality, and deliver AI-driven product experiences that bring joy, utility, and fulfillment into our users' lives.
We're a flat team of super-ICs, operating with minimal structure and hierarchy, emphasizing empowerment, decentralized decision making, and bias towards action from junior staff on up.
For the right design leader, we offer a unique and compelling place to create, ship, and expand. As a smaller, self-funded and profitable company, our foundational, aligned e-commerce business model funds our new product development, affording us adequate runway to invest and iterate towards solving real, hard customer problems and delivering uncompromising, delightful product platforms and experiences.
The role
We're seeking a Principal Product Designer to play a lead design role across our team. Our portfolio includes SimplyCodes, a social savings tool, and Product.ai, an upcoming generative AI platform and consumer service in the e-commerce space. In this role, you'll report directly to our CEO, collaborating closely with our AI engineering, data science, product, and growth teams, and run an iterative research, design, and prototyping process to design, develop, and ship new social / AI shopping platforms.
What you'll do

  • Own the end-to-end product experience for our shopping services, ensuring we're delivering value, utility, and delight to our users.
  • Run a lean, fast, iterative design concepting and prototyping process, continuously testing with users, conducting competitive research, deriving insights from data, and incorporating the latest trends and capabilities offered within the rapidly moving AI industry.
  • Develop new-to-industry user interaction patterns combining conversational, visual, interactive, and spatial interaction patterns enabling shoppers to navigate the shopping journey in completely new ways enabled by AI and spatial computing.
  • Stay abreast of the latest generative AI trends, new products, and platform capabilities, ensuring competitive insights and capabilities are factored into our product strategy.
  • Provide mentorship to junior designers on the team.

About you

  • You're a true end-to-end product designer, combining technical skill in both UX + visual design with the strategy and data-driven capabilities of a product manager.
  • You have direct experience with (or a strong interest in) designing and shipping generative AI products involving conversational interfaces, reinforcement learning mechanisms, and close collaboration with machine learning and data science teams.
  • Bonus if you've designed UGC-driven products involving user inputs, crowdsourcing, community governance and gamification mechanisms.
  • You have experience running product design for complex products spanning multiple surfaces (desktop, mobile, notification, chat) with complicated flows, multiple scenarios and edge cases.
  • Bonus if you have AR / VR / spatial computing UX design experience.

About the job

  • Starting total cash compensation: $250K - $550K DOE.
  • Stock options: 0.50% to 1.50% initial grant
  • Eligibility for our Equity Partners program, a profit-sharing system tied to individual and company performance.
  • Our Santa Monica HQ is a newly completed state-of-the-art technology development facility offering prodigious open space, open work setup, large recreation & break room with free food, silence / focus facilities, podcasting studio, and sweeping views from the ocean to downtown.
  • Full access to premium AI services, including ChatGPT Plus, Gemini Advanced, Perplexity Pro, GitHub Copilot, Midjourney, Anthropic Claude, Notion, and more.
  • Full coverage of your home internet and mobile phone plans (Equity Partners program benefit),
  • All meals provided free daily, fully stocked kitchen with free food, snacks, coffee and drinks.
  • Regular team-building events, dinners and activities.
