SVP/VP of Technical Operations 

Overview:

As Vice President of Technical Operations you will oversee our Infrastructure (DevOps & SRE), IT, and Information Security departments at Weedmaps. In this role you will have the very unique and exciting opportunity to lead and drive the architecture, development and continual improvement of the underlying Infrastructure platform that powers the Weedmaps portfolio of business products as well as lead the team responsible for building and maintaining the tools and services that make up the productivity tools, platforms and delivery pipelines used by the hundreds of developers at Weedmaps. You will ensure our architecture is flexible to allow for our growth into new business lines as well as the continued growth of our current business lines. You will have the opportunity to re-think our overall security practice. We are doubling down on our security as we scale the organization exponentially and invest in a high-performing team specifically focused on securing all aspects of the Weedmaps infrastructure and product portfolio given the large scale and scope of the organization.

Weedmaps powers the ecosystem of products supporting the cannabis industry such as our flagship consumer website and suite of B2B product lines. Additionally, as we expand our platform to provide end-to-end SaaS solutions for the cannabis supply chain, it will be increasingly necessary to unify the framework and architecture on which the platform operates within a scalable manner as our business and industry continues to grow. To be successful in this role, you will need to be familiar with modern Infrastructure and software development practices, CI tools, Docker and Kubernetes, AWS cloud infrastructure, Hashicorp suite, application monitoring (golden metrics, SLAs, SLIs, SLOs) and deployment automation. You’ll be able to analyze the state of security practices within Weedmaps and develop, communicate, execute and optimize a security roadmap to address gaps and continually improve the security posture of the company.

This is a strategic role that requires strong partnerships with other functions across the company. You'll partner with other senior leaders across the company to translate technology capabilities into strategic business decisions. You'll drive accountability and metrics ownership to translate strategy into results. And you'll align and inspire your organization by effectively communicating the strategy and driving the Weedmaps team to build a world class marketplace in the cannabis space. The impact you'll make:

  • Lead, grow and inspire the Infrastructure engineering teams, while building strong ownership and accountability within the team and management layer as the business and product complexity grows at rapid pace
  • Lead a team of engineers that design and develop scalable Infrastructure and software tooling solutions across the entire Weedmaps platform
  • Build and oversee a team to ensure the overarching Weedmaps product portfolio, application build pipelines, network infrastructure, Linux, Windows, Mac systems, AWS ecosystem, databases, private and public cloud environments and all of our data are highly secure and compliant.
  • Promote CI/monitoring/alerting standardization across multiple development teams and application services
  • Build long term technical and team strategies that align with Weedmaps’ strategic plan and influences the overall company direction
  • Build and develop engineering teams while challenging and motivating team to accomplish significant deliverables with tight deadlines
  • Manage and develop the backlogs and roadmaps for deployment services and tools
  • Work with stakeholders to develop and refine SLO/SLI for our production services
  • Work with the team to define effective monitors and alerts for all production services
  • Manage all aspects of our AWS deployment to ensure its continually providing strategic advantages as well as ensuring proper governance are in place.
  • Deliver and continually improve the developer productivity tools and software build pipelines to ensure a fast and frictionless developer experience from ideation to running in production.
  • Oversee application and infrastructure architecture to ensure operational and development security best practices are being embedded in the foundation of the way Weedmaps delivers its products and services.
  • Own & drive compliance programs and processes (GDPR, SOX, PCI, etc) from a technology perspective.
  • Keep abreast of emerging security threats and ensure remediation plans are in place.
  • Drive adoption and a culture of security champions using your influence to drive practical solutions and implementations in a complex and diverse application and product stack.
  • Oversee our IT Dept. to ensure delivery of safe, secure and efficient solutions for IT asset management, central user authority system and integration, automated onboarding and offboarding processes across all departments, laptop hardware and software management, antivirus software solutions
  • Forge strong partnerships with leaders across the company and use your influence to ensure mainstream adoption for current and future state products.

What you've accomplished:

  • 8+ years of engineering management experience in high-growth engineering organizations, with 3+ years of managing and developing Infrastructure and Software engineers and managers
  • Proven experience building, growing, inspiring and retaining a collaborative and client-focused team of managers and engineers
  • Experience leading large scale organizations of engineers; training and motivating managers to uplevel their teams
  • Experience building IT systems in a technology company with over a thousand employees
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a willingness to speak up and raise new ideas
  • Experience with modern monitoring tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, SignalFX
  • Intimate knowledge of Git and any of the major source code management products (GitHub, Gitlab, etc.)
  • Extensive cloud infrastructure and containerization experience (AWS, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
  • Experience working with one of the industry leading CI tools (CircleCi, Jenkins, Travis, Semaphore, Drone, etc.)
  • Knowledge of IT infrastructure, platform and data security architectures, and best practices; 
  • Knowledge on threat landscape, security threat and vulnerability management, as well as security monitoring and analytics; 
  • Knowledge in compliance frameworks and requirements such as HITRUST, PCI, HIPAA, SOX, etc.
  • Proficiency working with recognized IT and Information Security-related standards and technologies.
  • Experience working within a large web-scale software company. 
  • Strong ability to support and mentor team members to accomplish team goals
  • Ability to operate as the CEO, CFO, CMO and Chief Operations Officer for your organization. Drive clarity on which decisions you own and then own them.
  • Strong desire to deliver. Strong bias toward action and achieving the mission quickly.  Feverishly removes roadblocks, gets buy-in from peers, stakeholders and leaders, asks clarifying questions to ensure alignment and practicality, and gets the job done.
