KCRW is an award-winning public radio station in Southern California. Our production team is seeking a talented, full-time recording and audio engineer, working at the heart of the station’s day-to-day output and longer term special projects.

Reporting to the Production Manager, our new engineer will work on both live-to-air and pre-recorded material for broadcast and podcast. Their responsibilities include recording, editing and mixing daily, weekly and monthly programming, meeting time-sensitive deadlines. 

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, the ability to work solo or with a team, be highly self-motivated, and have a few years of studio experience (either broadcast or recording workplaces).

This is a full-time, non-exempt position.  This position is in the SAG-AFTRA Bargaining Unit.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Production Engineering
    • Record, mix, and edit the following audio elements:
      • Weekly talk programs
      • Weekly and monthly podcasts
      • Segments for both news and music programs
      • Commentaries and special features
      • Promos for all KCRW programs
  • Audio Engineering
    • Recording engineer for both live and pre-taped music sessions 
    • Edit music and interviews in post-production 
    • Record and plan remote broadcasts (live and taped)
    • Front of house live event mixing as needed
    • Lead and assist special projects to completion
    • Troubleshoot technical problems in time sensitive situations
    • Train KCRW staff on studio technology and workflow as needed

Required Skills, Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • Experience in radio / studio environments
  • Proficient in ProTools and Izotope RX Suite, with demonstrated ability to properly mix and repair audio captured from different backgrounds
  • Proficient using EQ, Compression and AudioSuite Plugins 
  • Detail oriented — understanding the importance of small and big picture projects
  • Excellent creative, organizational, strategic and interpersonal skills
  • Strong digital knowledge and experience
  • Knowledge and experience in digital editing software (Dalet Galaxy, a plus)
  • Knowledge and experience with Windows and iOS
  • Knowledge and experience in automation software 
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Informed about relevant technology to improve workflow
  • Have a passion for KCRW’s programming, interest in NPR news, current affairs, music, and the arts
  • Familiarity with analog gear and large-format mixing consoles are a plus 

Education and Experience:

  • At least 4 years of experience in either broadcasting or a studio environment
  • Undergraduate degree in broadcasting or recording preferred
  • Live music mixing experience preferred but not required
