Riot Games was established in 2006 by entrepreneurial gamers who believe that player-focused game development can result in great games. In 2009, Riot released its debut title League of Legends to critical and player acclaim. As the most played PC game in the world, over 67 million play every month. Players form the foundation of our community and it’s for them that we continue to evolve and improve the League of Legends experience.

We’re looking for humble but ambitious, razor-sharp professionals who can teach us a thing or two. We promise to return the favor. Like us, you take play seriously; you’re passionate about games. We embrace those who see things differently, aren’t afraid to experiment, and who have a healthy disregard for constraints.

That’s where you come in.

As an Esports Tech Intern, you'll be part of a technical team behind building and maintaining Esports services globally. You'll help teams deploy & maintain tournament realms, address system needs in new and creative ways, and ensure that Riot's infrastructure is capable of supporting all Riot Esports initiatives. You'll work in a self-guiding, cross-functional team with other humble but highly skilled individuals. We work in virtually every technical domain imaginable including network, systems, virtualization, containers & storage both on-prem, in several public clouds and spread across our Riot data centers.

As a Esports Tech Intern at Riot, you will support League of Legends Esports events and tournaments by:

  • Supporting globally distributed competitive tournament servers and infrastructure
  • Helping build tooling to support global Esports studio infrastructure
  • Helping designing and maintaining our global Esports network infrastructure & systems
  • Working on a diverse, cross-functional team that is defining the future evolution of the League of Legends Esports Ecosystem
  • Helping build a massive global platform for deploying and operating backend services

While our engineers come in all shapes and sizes and work with many technologies, we expect every engineer at Riot to be:

  • Player-focused: you're a gamer whose passion for games (especially League of Legends) helps you stay focused on initiatives that make the difference to players in and out of the game
  • A threat to convention: bored by what's considered traditional, you constantly push past limits until the status is no longer quo; you don't "think outside the box" because, hey, there's no box
  • Focused on team: you find, shape, and cultivate teams that don't just swing for the fences, they jack that (metaphorical) baseball beyond the stars; you help Rioters develop the tools and creative atmosphere to shine, but ultimately hold them accountable for making smart calls and delivering capital-V value
  • Seriously playful: you work hard but always leave time for pentakills; whether you're grabbing a game of League in our onsite PC Bang or rapidly sharing cat GIFs, you make time for daily play in all of its wonderful forms
  • Humbitious: you're ambitious but humble, a state of being summed up by fans of portmanteau as "humbitious;" always shooting for the stars, you never forgo rounds of feedback from teammates, players, and partners who keep you from drifting off into space
  • An automator: you realize that automation is the key to scaling. You've played with Chef, Ansible (or similar) and can script Python, Perl, Go, or all three. You've similarly grokked, deployed, and supported applications across various tech stacks; you're familiar with the core concepts of object-oriented, functional, and other programming paradigms and have used one or more modern source control management tools.
  • DevOps: you believe devops is a state of mind and you operate with total ownership. You recognize the value of iterative development and the buck stops at you for quality and support of what you deploy into production.
  • Desire to build: you've built computers & servers of all types, bare metal, in the cloud and in containers. You have experience running beefy systems and you're a pro with Linux operating systems (or willing to learn).
  • Adaptable: you're able to rapidly change direction when priorities shift, stay focused on the most relevant issues and can evolve and shift to meet them as needed.

To be eligible for an internship within the engineering discipline you should:

  • Be enrolled full-time in a computer science, engineering or relative program for a minimum of 1 school term following your internship with Riot
  • Be returning to university following your internship as a Junior or Senior with only 1-2 years left before completing your program
  • Have completed at least 1 competitive & related internship

To apply:

  • Please read through the internship page before applying. It includes helpful information that’ll increase your chances at landing the gig.
  • Your application must include a cover letter and resume. In your cover letter, please answer the following questions:
Why are you interested in working at Riot Games?
Describe your most memorable gaming experience (gameplay, events, feature updates, community engagement, etc).

The application deadline for summer 2019 internships is October 31st, 2018Applications received after this date won't be eligible for a Summer 2019 internship. We recognize that a great internship application takes time and effort, so we promise to return the favor of your effort with a response by November 14th, 2018.
