Heliogen is a renewable energy technology company focused on eliminating the need for fossil fuels in heavy industry and powering a sustainable future. The company’s AI-enabled, modular concentrated solar technology aims to cost-effectively deliver near 24/7 carbon-free energy in the form of heat, power, or green hydrogen fuel at scale – for the first time in history.

Heliogen is a well-funded startup that is growing exponentially this year to combat the existential crisis of climate change.  Our innovative technology is being developed by industry veterans and engineering leaders from institutions like: Caltech, Harvey Mudd, MIT, Princeton, UC Berkeley, etc.

Our engineering org is divided into 5 teams looking for students finishing their junior year by spring/summer 2022:

Heliostats – This team of mechanical and electrical engineers design, build, test and deploy the mirror and motor systems that precisely redirect the sun’s energy.

Software & Systems – This team of mechanical and software engineers uses control theory, computer vision, machine learning and scientific computing to design and control systems that direct megawatts of radiant power.

Thermal Receiver & Storage – This team of mechanical and chemical engineers uses heat transfer, mass transfer and fluid dynamics to analyze, design, build, test and deploy our system that absorbs the sun’s energy and transfers and stores > 1000°C heat.

Power Block – This team of mechanical engineers is using thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, rotor dynamics, and advanced manufacturing methods to build turbo-machinery using cutting edge technology that will convert the heat into power.

Test & Reliability – This team of mechanical, electrical, and materials engineers architect and execute environmental, static/dynamic load, and cyclical wear tests needed to validate the heliostat design.

Manufacturing Engineering This team of multi-disciplinary engineers designs, builds, and qualifies the automated, and non-automated, production systems that manufacture the product, while also liaising with Design teams to ensure the product is designed for manufacturability.

You Aspire To:

  • Engineer systems that harness the sun’s power and convert it into a sustainable energy source
  • Be part of a high-performing engineering team that outperforms our size
  • Roll up your sleeves and analyze, design, test, build, deploy – rinse & repeat
  • Innovate and build things that have never been built before – this requires creativity and grit

What's Desirable:

  • Building - You are curious and passionate about learning new technologies, tinkering, taking things apart to learn how they work and rebuilding them even better.
  • Optimizing - Innovating on and improving yourself, your team and the products you build.
  • Owning - Do or do not, there is no try.

 What’s Essential:

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering, Physics, Math or Computer Science
  • First principles approach to problem solving
  • Internships, projects, systems you have built outside of the classroom

Heliogen was created at Idealab, the leading technology incubator founded by Bill Gross in 1996.
