About the VP of Platform Engineering at Headspace:

Headspace is looking for an exceptional leader as the VP of Platform Engineering, reporting directly to the CTO. This role is based in our Santa Monica office.

This individual will be someone who understands how to design software platforms to accelerate product development. You will bring your expertise to bear on helping scale Headspace as we move into new geographic markets, new platforms and new verticals ensuring we are living our vision of improving the health and happiness of the world. You will focus on building a scalable, secure, and extensible infrastructure and API stack to help the Headspace product and partnership teams ship new features and build new capabilities.

From a technology perspective you are able to transverse, ‘talk’ and understand multiple languages and be as comfortable discussing decisions with our iOS developers as you are with our back end service engineers. You care deeply about the user experience and help each person on your team understand the impact of their decisions on creating the best possible experience for our members.

How your skills and passion will come to life at Headspace:

• You will help design and implement our scaling strategy including disaster recovery and scaling our POPs internationally
• You will guide the team through transitions as we continue to scale from startup to a mature scaled organization that can deliver high quality quickly
• Build a platform that enables a ubiquitous experience across a multitude of platforms ensuring Headspace continuity for members
• Take the breadth of your knowledge from low level data systems and API design to enable us to more rapidly build secure systems that help us deliver on our mission to increase the health and happiness of the world
• Form strong cross-functional partnerships to achieve alignment with many engineering teams and ensure our solutions meet their needs
• Design and implement incident management and response procedures used across the company
• Deliver complex infrastructural projects and execute within a microservice environment
• Build & mentor a cohesive team of amazing engineers in a fast-paced startup
• Rapidly scale the engineering team and help secure top engineering talent
• Foster and grow an engineering environment that incorporates high quality, simple design and innovative technical solutions

What you’ve accomplished:

• 10+ years of experience in an Engineering Leadership position
• Lead teams that embrace automation
• Extensive experience scaling infrastructure systems
• Experience working with open source technologies (i.e. Node.js)
• Handled distributed systems deployed across multiple geographic regions
• Promote engineering discipline and performance management on backend services
• Exceptionally strong leadership skills — experience building great engineering cultures, inspiring engineers and building brands around technical work
• Create an environment that attracts, retains, and motivates top tier engineers to do their best work
