About Patch

You hear it all the time — our healthcare system is broken. But, if you’re like most people, this “brokenness” is more about the nightmare of dealing with insurance, co-pays, and collections than the actual quality of care one receives. HMO/PPO/HSA/FSA/HRA/EPO… honestly, until we built this company, we had no idea what any of these even meant! If you’re like us, you just want to know how much you are covered for, that your insurance is billed correctly and then pay your doctor for their time.

We believe that healthcare should be simple to use and easy to understand, because going to the doctor is stressful enough. We created Patch after personal experiences left us feeling completely helpless and frustrated by the difficult process to access the insurance benefits we were entitled to. We didn’t want others to feel that same pain and frustration.

Our mission is to make healthcare easy to pay for. We’ve been proving out our product, starting with the vision care market, but with thousands of providers already using our system, we’re ready to expand to the rest of the healthcare ecosystem. We’re going to make insurance as easy as using your Visa card. With a fresh Series A round, we’re looking for A+ players who want to make a lasting impact on the world.

The VP of Engineering will be simultaneously responsible for managing our 12-person remote team and scaling our team as we transition to the next phase of growth. The ideal candidate is someone who has entrepreneurial ambitions of their own and experience working in successful startups as both an individual contributor and a manager of other engineers, and wants the experience of working directly with founders. Some of the technical challenges ahead of us include: scaling our real-time data pipeline and connectivity into health insurers, building novel algorithms to predict health insurance reimbursements and help doctors optimize the payment process, and develop and scale our internal claim and operational tools.

Our ideal candidate has

  • 5+ years of shipping code in small, fast-moving teams
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent work experience
  • 3+ years of software engineering management experience with a proven track record of leading software engineering teams delivering highly scalable solutions rapidly
  • A track record of promotion to leadership
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with architectural design with an emphasis on performance, continuous delivery, and scalability
  • Proficiency throughout the stack and experience with modern web app languages and frameworks (e.g. python, react)

You will

  • Lead, mentor and manage the existing and future software developers and QA and provide hands-on assistance and guidance as necessary.
  • Collaborate with our backend and frontend team leaders to manage product development, technical design, architecture, and implementation as we expand our product
  • Recruit and hire additional developers as we expand our products per the company roadmap.
  • Collaborate with other senior management, sales, operations, partners, and customers to manage new product features and development roadmap. An ability to cross-functionally communicate with business personnel is key.
  • Establish clear goals, performance objectives, timelines and manage expectations of the dev team.
  • Keeps a unified view of the broader objectives of the company to push/pull team members.
  • Roll up your sleeves and get involved in developing our solutions and putting out fires when they happen. Although primary responsibilities will be overseeing and designing development, you should be willing and eager to write code, make improvements, and fix bugs as needed.
  • Ability to handle moderate chaos from time to time.
