Boeing Defense, Space, and Security (BDS) is seeking a System Engineer - Landing and Recovery (Level 2) located in Seal Beach, CA. This is a 1st shift position. Position requires travel, up to 25% domestically.

Boeing Defense, Space & Security’s (BDS) X-37B is the United States’ most advanced, state-of-the-art reentry space craft. Boeing is the prime contractor for the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle (OTV), an unmanned space vehicle that is used by the United States Air Force to explore reusable space vehicle technologies in support of long-term space objectives.

Objectives of the X-37B program include space experimentation, risk reduction, and concept of operations development. Managed by Experimental Systems Group (ESG), a unit of Boeing Space and Launch Systems, the X-37B is a flexible, affordable and responsive platform balancing the characteristics of a spacecraft and an aircraft. A unit of The Boeing Company, Boeing Defense, Space, and Security (BDS) is one of the world's largest defense, space and security businesses specializing in innovative and capabilities-driven customer solutions, and the world's largest and most versatile producer of military aircraft and commercial/civil/government space systems.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain system Concept of Operations for landing and recovery and/or related systems.
  • Conduct flight line and flight test operations, including hazardous operations and X-37B land and recovery operations.
  • Manage and execute off-site activities with diverse, multidisciplinary team from multiple organizations, internal and external to Boeing.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute procedures, concepts of operation, and contingency plans for hazardous aerospace operations.
  • Acquire, develop, maintain and operate assets and specialized ground equipment required to support an unmanned system and support personnel.
  • Operate in close partnership with the recovery, engineering, operations, military base leadership, range operations, and project teams to develop and maintain rehearsal and overall training requirements and procedures.
  • Coordinate all aspects of readiness for rehearsals and events, including people, training, and equipment across multiple sites and with multiple entities.
  • Disposition lessons-learned to develop and implement process improvement initiatives.

This position requires an active/current Top Secret U.S. Security Clearance. (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active.) Special Program Access is required pre-start.

Basic (Required) Requirements:

Bachelor's degree or higher in an engineering discipline is required.

Preferred (Desired) Requirements:
Experience with flight test, flight operations, or system test preferred
Experience with CONOPS development preferred
Systems Engineering experience preferred
Experience with system development and/or operations preferred
Experience with sUAS operations preferred
Experience with hazardous operations and contingency planning preferred
Good mechanical and/or electrical aptitude and be comfortable with hands-on work preferred
Experience/domain knowledge of ESG (Experimental Systems Group) is preferred.
Experience with critical lifts and/or critical moves preferred
Familiarity with airfield operations preferred
Experience with CWA and clean room protocols preferred
Familiarity with RF communication systems and RF hazards preferred

Typical Education and Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Relocation:

This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility. Basic relocation is available for internal candidates.
