The Boeing Defense, Space and Security, Autonomous Systems division is seeking a Software Engineer (Level 3) to provide support to the Gigabit Ethernet Data Multiplex System (GEDMS) program for the Missions and Payloads Group. Missions and Payloads integrates Boeing’s sensors, payloads and intelligence businesses to provide mission support and vertical content on surface, subsurface, air and ground platforms, and includes three of the division’s five subsidiaries: Argon ST, Boeing Intelligence & Analytics, and DRT, Inc. The business further supports customer missions and payloads needs through proprietary programs and by providing acoustics systems, integrated shipboard systems, tactical communications systems and advanced mission solutions.  

Gigabit Ethernet Data Multiplex System (GEDMS) is an accredited ship-wide Platform Information Technology (PIT) control system data network that is the latest variant of Boeing’s AN/USQ-82(V) family of shipboard networks. The system is designed for use on U.S. Navy Surface Combatants, Carriers and Amphibious ships including the Arleigh Burke class of destroyers, DDG-51 and follow-on derivatives, and Aegis Ashore installations.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with GEDMS senior software engineers in the development of networking and cyber software and Applications for US Navy ships.
  • Develop and maintain code, and integrate software components into a fully functional software system.
  • Develop software verification plans, test procedures and test environments, execute test procedures and document test results to ensure software system requirements are met.
  • Develop, select, tailor and deploy software processes, tools and metrics

This position is located in a location that does not offer relocation. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.

Basic Qualifications/Experience and Skills Required:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain an interim secret clearance (Pre-Hire), and a final U.S. Secret Security Clearance, for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. (Post Start)
  • Bachelor’s degree and typically 3-5 years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience.
  • 2+ years’ experience and knowledge in developing custom device drivers and kernel modules for the Linux operating system.
  • 2+ years’ experience and knowledge of the Linux Kernel architecture and key areas of implementation.
  • 3+ years’ experience with UDP/TCP IP programming.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Has good skills in identifying and solving complex networking or hardware issues.
  • Able to use a wide array of tools in the lab to diagnose issues quickly.
  • Experience with IP networking protocols (ICMP, ARP, IGMP, RIP, DHCP etc.) and techniques.
  • Experience with translating between IP and lower layer legacy protocols. 
  • Ability to travel to US Navy ships and labs, take trips at sea, and solve user networking issues. 
  • Previous exposure with US Navy ships. 
  • Familiarity and experience with network and software cybersecurity practices

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
