About This Role

At Apeel Sciences, we look to nature to help the global food system improve quality, reduce waste, and ensure an abundant future for our planet. The Engineering team is responsible for bringing our amazing innovations from the R&D labs to customers by designing and developing equipment, machineries, and hardware and software-based tools. We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer who will be responsible for collaborating on the design of equipment used for application and testing. You will ensure that all equipment incorporates the best sanitary and hygienic design principles for safety and food handling.

What You'll Do

  • Design and build systems, machineries, equipment, and tools that exceed sanitary design standards for commercial scale application and assessment of processing efficacy
  • Oversee the implementation of sanitary design requirements and best practices for equipment designed, built, or sourced from third party vendors
  • Maintain responsibility for documentation, including Installation, Operational, Performance & Qualification (IOPQ) documentation, design documentation (including Bills of Materials), and needed assembly or user documentation
  • Interpret regulations from domestic and international regulatory authorities and apply these principles to Apeel’s equipment
  • Ensure selection and documentation of appropriate material of construction
  • Work with Document Control on all necessary record keeping of materials and components related to food safety certifications and standards
  • Identify key opportunities in existing equipment and tooling where sanitary and hygienic design principles may be improved
  • Provide training and generate documentation on the use, cleaning, and maintenance of equipment
  • Generate detailed CAD assemblies with appropriate subassemblies and custom parts and part drawings in order to fabricate and build new tooling and equipment
  • Generate and carry out performance validation test plans for new designs
  • Write technical reports and present design and test results during Apeel’s technical forums 

What You’ll Bring

  • A proven track record of implementing sanitary and hygienic design practices in the food industry
  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (ideal) and five years of work experience
  • Experience designing agriculture and food handling equipment (or similar)
  • Knowledge of the Sanitary and Hygienic Design standards for the food and agriculture industries
  • Experience working with governing bodies or test agencies on the implementation and testing of food processing equipment to applicable standards
  • Experience using CAD (preferably SolidWorks)
  • Experience with the assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of electro-mechanical systems
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, PFDs, and P&IDs
  • Extensive knowledge of 21CFR Part 110 and 117, cGMPs, GEPs, and GDPs
  • Experience working with component suppliers to identify, validate, and source key components
  • Experience performing complex root cause and corrective actions analysis
