Satellite Production Engineering (SPE), located in El Segundo, CA, is seeking a career experienced, highly skilled, and motivated team member to serve in the Senior Launch Lead – Project Engineer role. The Candidate will provide project and technical leadership and ensure common practices across programs and product lines for definition of launch interfaces, documentation of engineering requirements, and analyses of launch and ascent environments. 

The Senior Launch Lead during project execution leads a multi-skilled, multi-disciplined team composed of exempt, nonexempt and hourly personnel in the execution of a Launch campaign of an assigned satellite in accordance with customer requirements, business objectives and Boeing processes.  Within the scope of Launch, lead project execution to complete the work statement, identify performance metrics.  Plan and coordinate resources required over the life of the project, assign responsibility for activities to team members and ensure technical correctness and consistency of the satellite product; compare actual results to baseline plan to assess project performance, efficiencies, productivity, and lessons learned; identify corrective actions to improve team performance and future project execution. Ensure team member’s use established Boeing Space and Launch systems processes, procedures, and best practices as appropriate.  Develop and maintain a detailed launch integration and operations schedules.

The role entails travel and possible, 1-4 week absences from home per year.  

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manages launch vehicle mechanical, electrical, and environmental interfaces for spacecraft launching on various launch vehicles including: Ariane, Atlas, Delta, Falcon, Proton
  • Responsible for satellite/ launch vehicle interface design requirements, approval of ICD, spacecraft test programs, coordinating satellite processing activities at the launch site, launch countdown activities and shipping logistics
  • Launch campaign manager leading a team of ~ 30 individuals conducting spacecraft integration, test, and propulsion activities at Cape Canaveral, and international launch sites in French Guiana, and Kazakhstan
  • Develop and maintain launch integration and operations schedules
  • Optimize processing schedules shoulder to shoulder with the Customer and consultants to achieve optimum durations
  • Provides technical leadership and ensures common engineering process/practices for El Segundo Satellite Division Launch preparations and launch campaigns
  • Serves as the primary launch liaison to launch service providers (both foreign and domestic), United States government departments and agencies, and national security customers
  • Primary interface with customers and subcontractors on all matters related to spacecraft launch vehicle interfaces and spacecraft launch site operations 
  • Works closely with program managers, program and functional chief engineers to ensure mission success and prompt resolution of issues and anomalies
  • Project Manager for all launch related tasks: including technical, cost, schedule, and risk/opportunity management
  • Project management: adopts and drives common practices to meet programs’ cost, schedule, quality and technical objectives, including capturing lessons learned and best practices for implementation on future programs
  • Requires working at remote launch site environments where it is necessary to deal with unforeseen challenges, crisis management, and effectively address issues in a timely manner in order to maintain critical milestone dates
  • Leads the development of launch related documentation, including interface requirements and control documents, launch operations plans and procedures, and safety submittals
  • Coordinates preparation and delivery of spacecraft analysis, models and analysis reports
  • Manages ITAR and EAR exports to international customers and launch services providers
  • 25% travel is required

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.  An interim and/or final U.S. top secret clearance Post Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • 10+ years of experience in data analysis and/or process improvements and/or manufacturing engineering, and/or production system developments
  • 10+ years of experience with space, launch vehicle, or satellite programs
  • 10+ years of experience in leading a Production Engineering Team

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • An Active SSBI clearance
  • 14 or more years of full time aerospace industry experience within Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, Launch operations or Production engineering
  • Launch systems engineering and operations experience
  • Experience interfacing with external customers, subcontractors, launch vehicle suppliers
  • Experience as a Project manager in a Production/Operations Environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Multi-skill leader, Solid Problem Solving & Decision Making Skills
  • Satellite systems integration and test experience

Typical Education & Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
