Materials Engineer
Heliogen is a renewable energy technology company focused on eliminating the need for fossil fuels in heavy industry and powering a sustainable future. The company’s AI-enabled, modular concentrated solar technology aims to cost-effectively deliver near 24/7 carbon-free energy in the form of heat, power, or green hydrogen fuel at scale – for the first time in history.
You Aspire To:
Be the primary source for materials expertise, information, and analysis including metallics, adhesives, polymers, and glass/ceramics. This includes working directly with design and manufacturing engineering teams throughout the engineering, design, and production validation process to evaluate materials, define, and execute necessary tests to ensure reliability goals are met.
What's Essential:
- BS, MS, or PhD in Engineering with minimum of 5 years work experience that includes hands-on experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment
- Primary source for materials expertise, information, and analysis including metallics, adhesives, polymers, and glass/ceramics
- Ensure developed materials meet all material design requirements and provide technical support to the design and manufacturing teams
- Evaluate corrosion inhibitors and corrosion protective compounds to be applied on components based on operating environments
- Support on-going material application processes for adhesives and sealers. Work with the manufacturing teams to ensure processes are robust and optimized
- Support process validation for all new processes or materials
- Develop new material strategies for lower cost manufacturing with improved quality
- Characterize in-field performance over time and correlate data design validate test program to refine predictive models
What's Desirable:
- Masters or Ph.D. in materials science or materials engineering, or a related field preferred
- Knowledge of polymers and polymer chemistry as they relate to adhesives
- Thorough understating of surface chemistry and its relationship to adhesion
- Knowledge of basic adhesive chemistries (epoxy, polyurethane, acrylic, silicone, etc.)
- Thorough knowledge of coating processes and their relationships to material properties
- Familiarity with polyurethane paints, anodize coatings, corrosion protection compounds and corrosion inhibitors
- Extensive experience in operating a diverse range of materials testing equipment including: SEM-EDS, FTIR, DSC, TGA, MFI, CTI (Comparative Tracking Index), rheometry, viscometry, optical microscopy, UV-weathering apparatus, hygrothermal chambers, hardness testers, cross-section sample preparation and mechanical property testing
- Understanding of metrology, sources of measurement error, and uncertainty analysis
- Ability to perform manufacturing test data analysis to determine pass/fail and in-family as well as root cause anomalies
- Experience of working with hazardous materials with a willingness to exhibit and promote health and safety across the team
