At tronc we are growing data and engineering teams in our Los Angeles offices to power the future of digital news and promote quality journalism.  We’re looking for a smart and talented software engineer who wants to contribute to the future of journalism and fit into our culture of collaboration and innovation.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and implement cloud platforms, apps, and services that enable the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, New York Daily News, and over 100 other publications to deliver content to over 100 million monthly unique visitors
  • Update and maintain Wordpress applications that enable journalists to distribute content in a complex ecosystem
  • Develop and expand on microservices and RESTful APIs that are responsible for secure data transport and newsletter delivery
  • Translate feature requests and designs into high quality code that is testable and maintainable
  • Build reusable components and libraries for future use

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience
  • 5+ years experience with JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, jQuery. Knowledge of Angular 2 or 4 definitely a plus
  • 5+ years experience with PHP and Wordpress applications
  • 3+ years experience with NodeJS and backend frameworks such as Express
  • Solid understanding of RESTful APIs and REST principles
  • Experience with relational databases, experience with MySQL a plus. 
  • Good understanding of source control technologies (particularly Git)
  • Experience with responsive frameworks (e.g. Foundation or Bootstrap)
  • Knowledge of Email principles and best practices a plus.
  • The ability to break problems down into actionable development tasks, and accurate estimates around the effort needed to complete them
  • A strong work ethic, equally productive whether working independently or in a collaborative team environment (peer programming, code reviews, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Insight, humility, creativity, a sense of humor, and a willingness to teach and learn.
