Demand.io (https://demand.io) is looking to bring on an entrepreneurial, hands-on technology leader as our first CTO. We’re an innovation-first technology company focused on solving pervasive user problems in e-commerce. As a media lab, we incubate new ideas, iterate and invest based on traction. We've launched and scaled four consumer-facing digital brands reaching millions of users, and our products facilitate roughly 1 billion dollars in annual e-commerce transaction volume for our e-commerce retail partners.

How do we operate?

We look for patterns of disruption in e-commerce driven by technological change and identify new classes of user or business problems likely to arise. We then ideate, prototype and scale greenfield digital services that connect people, resources and information in useful ways as these macro trends unfold.

We have a unique operating model as a partnership, or co-op. Our primary business goal is continued organic growth of revenue and profitability, rather than an exit or sale. We create economic alignment through a dividend sharing system through which team members gain a partner stake in the company and have cash compensation via profit shared, linked to the company’s overall success. We believe in wealth creation opportunity across the team at all levels of seniority.

About the role

To date, we’ve operated as a media lab. Experimentation and iterative design and development have defined our culture and ethos. As our products have matured, we’re moving through a natural transition towards a more mature technology organization, preserving our roots as an innovator but also with greater alignment towards disciplined product execution built to achieve product market fit and to scale from millions to hundreds of millions of users.

The lean startup will always be in our DNA. From our CEO down, we’re all hands on and involved in the details of execution. We’re more craftsmen, less managers. The ideal head of engineering for us will be a software architect at heart, with the business acumen to deliver results and leadership qualities to build a winning team.

The CTO will also be a leading voice driving our product strategy and defining our product portfolio thesis across the e-commerce landscape. Our product roadmap and vision spans conversational commerce, augmented reality, blockchain economics and empowered communities. You’ll play an integral role in developing our innovation themes and creating a technology vision and infrastructure to realize an incredibly ambitious roadmap.

What you’ll do

• Own our technology vision and strategy. Be a key contributor to our overall vision and product roadmap.
• Manage all aspects of our technology platform, including our core commerce system and consumer-facing applications
• Set and exemplify our engineering culture of excellence
• Attract top engineering talent, build a cohesive team, run a high performance organization that delivers against ambitious commitments and timelines
• Be a hands-on leader. As a small organization, all team members must contribute directly towards our success.
• Be a thought leader in technology, innovation and consumer digital / e-commerce
• Lead through principles consistent with Demand.io's core values of innovation, empowerment and continuous growth

About you

• Strong software architecture background. 10+ years experience in software architecture design and development.
• 5+ years experience leading and building high performance engineering teams and organizations
• Track record of shipping production code in demanding, high volume environments
• Comfortable working on multiple products in parallel, balancing resources against competing demands and priorities
• Innovative mindset. Ability to ideate with us on greenfield concepts with no analogues and contribute to our strategic technology vision.
